HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 Wide Format All-in-One Printer

I have restored the factory default settings but my printer will not print because it keeps asking for an admin (user name) and password. What else can I do?

Hi @zethanialdelwin,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your printer is still asking for an admin username and password even after a factory reset, it might be due to one of the following reasons:

Network or Wireless Security Settings: Sometimes, printers are connected to a network with security settings that require authentication. This can happen if the printer was previously set up on a network with secured access. Here’s what you can do:

Check Network Settings:

  1. On the printer’s control panel, navigate to the Network or Wireless settings.
  2. Look for options like Wireless Setup Wizard or Network Setup.
  3. Reconnect the printer to your network by following the setup prompts. Make sure you select the correct network and enter the correct network password if prompted.

Reset Network Settings: Some printers have a specific option to reset the network settings, which might help clear any residual settings that require an admin login.

  1. Navigate to the Setup or Network menu.
  2. Look for an option like Restore Network Defaults or Reset Network Settings.

Admin Password Issues:

Try Default Admin Credentials: If the printer is still asking for an admin username and password after a reset, try the default credentials. Often, the default username might be admin and the default password might be admin or 1234. Consult your printer’s manual for default credentials.

Resetting the Printer’s Admin Settings: Sometimes a more thorough reset is needed. Power off the printer, then remove any installed cartridges and any network cables. Wait a few minutes, then power it on and try the setup process again without connecting it to a network immediately.

Check the Printer’s Documentation or Support:

  • Consult the printer’s user manual or HP’s official support site for specific instructions related to your model. There might be a unique procedure for clearing admin settings or further troubleshooting steps.

Firmware Update or Reinstallation:

  • Sometimes a firmware issue can cause persistent login prompts. Check the HP support website for any firmware updates for your printer model and follow their instructions for updating the firmware.

Factory Reset Again:

  • Perform the factory reset one more time, following all steps carefully. Make sure to unplug the printer from the power source and wait for a few minutes before reconnecting it.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
