HP LaserJet MFP M140we Printer

My wifi light is blinking. I have unplugged it and restarted it. I have restarted my computer. The troubleshooter says my "printer is off" ant to "fix the problem", I should "turn it on". It is on. I need a step-by-step instruction on how to fix the connection. There is no WPS on my router (at least, there is no corresponding symbol and no "WPS" button...). Please help.

Hi @Jamberryb,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are trying to connect your HP LaserJet MFP M140we printer to your Wi-Fi network without WPS, follow these steps carefully:

Step-by-Step Instructions to Connect HP LaserJet MFP M140we to Wi-Fi:

Step 1: Prepare the Printer for Wireless Setup HP printer setup (Wi-Fi network)

  1. Turn on your printer: Make sure the printer is powered on.
  2. Wi-Fi button check: Ensure that the Wi-Fi light on your printer is blinking, which indicates that the printer is ready to connect to a network. If it’s not blinking, try pressing the Wi-Fi button on the printer for a few seconds until the light starts blinking.

Step 2: Connect the Printer to Wi-Fi via the Control Panel

Use the Printer's Control Panel:

  • On the printer, press and hold the Wireless button (the one with the Wi-Fi symbol) for about 5 seconds until the Wi-Fi light starts blinking rapidly.
  • Then, press the Information button (the one with the i symbol).
  • The printer will print a network configuration page. Look at the "Wireless Summary" section on the page to check the printer's current connection status. If it shows "Not Connected", proceed to the next step to connect.

Using the HP Smart App to Connect: HP printer setup (HP Smart app)

  • Download the HP Smart app if you haven't already (from the Microsoft Store on your computer, or from your mobile device’s app store).
  • Open the HP Smart app on your computer or smartphone.
  • Select Set Up a New Printer and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • The app should automatically detect the printer on your network. If your printer is not detected, try the following troubleshooting:
    • Ensure that your computer or phone is on the same Wi-Fi network as the printer.
    • Restart your router if necessary.

Step 3: Use the Printer’s Embedded Web Server (EWS) for Network Configuration Use the HP printer Embedded Web Server (EWS)

If you don't have the HP Smart app or prefer manual configuration:

  1. Find the Printer’s IP Address:
    • If your printer’s Wi-Fi light is still blinking, it is likely still trying to connect to the network. Once connected, print another network configuration page (as explained earlier), which should display the printer's IP address.
  2. Access the Embedded Web Server (EWS):
    • Open a web browser on your computer.
    • Type the printer’s IP address (found on the network configuration page) in the browser’s address bar and press Enter.
  3. Configure Wi-Fi Settings:
    • The EWS page will open. Go to the Network tab and select Wireless Settings or Wireless Setup Wizard.
    • Choose your network from the list of available Wi-Fi networks, enter your Wi-Fi password, and follow the prompts to complete the setup.

Step 4: Test the Printer Connection

  1. Once the printer is connected to the network, try printing a test page from the HP Smart app or your computer to ensure the printer is working correctly.
  2. If the printer still shows as “offline,” restart your computer and printer to ensure the connection is established properly.
  • Make sure your router is compatible with the printer’s Wi-Fi network (2.4 GHz, not 5 GHz, if you’re using dual-band Wi-Fi).
  • If the Wi-Fi light continues blinking and you can't connect, ensure that the printer is close enough to the router for a stable connection, or consider moving it closer.
  • Firmware updates: Occasionally, you may need to update the printer’s firmware, which can be done via the HP Smart app or the EWS page (if available).

I hope this helps.
