HP OfficeJet Pro 8725 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

Unknown recent update to Windows 11 or HP Printer All in One 8725 wireless, when trying to use the on screen icon to bring up scanning, faxing, etc results in a new screen as if the printer is not connected. YET, I can print from my desktop.  I want the icon to work.  I have installed HP Smart, but do not like it as well and doesn't have the details for scanning that the original application does.

Hi @robnsac1019,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If the icon for your HP OfficeJet 8720 series printer is not functioning properly after a recent update, here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and restore the original functionality for scanning and other features:

1. Reinstall HP Printer Software

Uninstall the Current Software:

  • Go to Settings > Apps > Installed Apps.
  • Find your HP printer software (like HP Printer Assistant) and uninstall it.

Download the Latest Software:

  • Visit the HP Support website.
  • Enter your printer model (8720) and download the latest version of the full feature software.

Install the Software:

  • Follow the prompts to install the software, ensuring all features (including scanning) are included.

2. Check Printer Connections

  • USB vs. Wireless: If your printer is connected wirelessly, ensure it’s still on the same network as your PC. If you’re using a USB connection, ensure the cable is properly connected.
  • Restart Devices: Restart both your printer and computer to refresh connections.

3. Update Drivers

  • Go to Device Manager (right-click the Start button).
  • Locate your printer under Printers, right-click it, and select Update driver.
  • Choose Search automatically for updated driver software.

4. Restore Original HP Software Settings

  • Open the HP software from your Start menu (not the Smart app).
  • Navigate to the Settings or Preferences section.
  • Check if the scanner options are available and configure them.

5. Check Windows 11 Privacy Settings

  • Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera and Microphone.
  • Ensure that apps have permission to use the camera (for scanning) if applicable.

6. Reconfigure the Scanner

  1. Open the HP software that was installed.
  2. Select the option for Scanning and ensure the printer is selected as the device.
  3. Run a test scan to verify that the connection is working.

7. Troubleshoot with HP Print and Scan Doctor

  • Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor.
  • This tool can automatically diagnose and fix common issues related to printing and scanning.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
