I assume that by wireless direct you mean "air print"
There are reports of both success and failure for the 8600
It may be that your older printer is missing WPA2 and airprint is failing if only wep or wpa is possible
Check your printers firmware date and verify it is May 2022
if it is older then install the latest https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software12/COL40120/bi-108858-4/Full_Webpack-1312_1-OJ8600_Full_Webpa...
then try the airprint as suggested above.
