Common problems for Connectivity Issues
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about Printer Wi-Fi, Connectivity Issues and Offline Status. Check out this link: HP printer is offline or unavailable.

I got a paper jam in the fuser.  I opened the back panel and got most of the paper out using the standard process, but part of the paper tore off and is inside the fuser that I can't see or reach.  I assume I need to disassemble the printer to try to clear it, but how do I do that?  A video link would be very helpful.  TIA.  MODEL:  HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M479fdw

Hi @caerd

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Clearing a paper jam from the fuser area in the HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M479fdw can be a bit tricky, especially when part of the paper is torn and out of sight. The fuser is a sensitive component that requires careful handling to avoid damage, so disassembling the printer should only be done with caution.

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to clear the paper jam, and I'll also guide you to videos to assist in the process.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Turn off and Unplug the Printer:

Always turn off the printer and unplug it to avoid any electrical issues or burns when working around the fuser.

2. Remove the Toner Cartridges and Imaging Drums:

  • Open the front cover of the printer.
  • Remove the toner cartridges and imaging drums (if installed). Set them aside in a safe area to avoid damage to the components.

3. Remove the Back Cover:

  • Open the back panel of the printer to gain access to the fuser. Since you’ve already removed some paper, this should give you more visibility into the area.
  • Depending on the design of the printer, there may be a release latch or screws that you’ll need to remove to detach the back panel.

4. Inspect the Fuser Area:

  • You may see remnants of the torn paper inside the fuser or on the rollers.
  • Be careful not to damage any of the rollers or electrical components inside the fuser area.
  • You can use a pair of tweezers or needle-nose pliers to grab and pull out the paper pieces that are stuck inside. Be sure to pull gently to avoid damaging any internal parts.

5. Use a Cleaning Cloth (Optional):

If the paper has left any bits of residue or toner inside, you can use a lint-free cloth or a piece of paper towel slightly dampened with water to gently wipe around the fuser and rollers. Do not use alcohol or harsh chemicals.

6. Reassemble the Printer:

  • Once the jam is cleared, replace the toner cartridges and imaging drums.
  • Attach the back panel and any screws or latches that were removed.
  • Plug the printer back in and turn it on.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
