I know this is stupid, but clearing out my files, I just rediscovered two different messages from HP saying, "Congratulations! Your printer is now web-connected and has its own e-mail address. E-mail files to your printer to print from anywhere at any time." I was having both printer issues and computer issues at the time--HP replaced that printer--and now I have no idea which one applies to the current machine. Is there a way to tell, and can I still install that connection? I guess I was too busy at work to get into it at the time, but I would really like that capability now!

Yes, you can use ePrint.

It's old tech that still works.

The software is fully automated, though, and it works or does not.

Should it stop, HP will kick it back into service when the issue is corrected.

There are a few main parts to ePrint and its setup in HP Smart - HP Connected

  • Add the Printer to your HP Smart / HP Connected Account
  • After the printer is added, make sure you open ePrint only to those email addresses you want to use the service.
  • As long as you select a name not used before, you can rename your ePrint printer address to other than the very long and hard to type original name.  Note that if you lose use of your custom ePrint Address along the way, you cannot reuse it.  You can, however, use a new name that is close to the original -- change / add a letter or number, for example, just enough to make the new name "unique".

After that, it is just a matter of following the many rules - these are outlined in the how to document.

No, the rules are not flexible - as mentioned, ePrint is old tech.  As such it is fussy, straight-laced, and limited.

The only interaction you will receive other than (hopefully) a printed output, is an email message that says something to the order of "ePrint job submitted" , "ePrint job accepted".  Then you wait -- it takes a few minutes to longer.  After 24 hours, the job will have been cancelled on the server side -- No, you do not get a message.

Regardless, ePrint is nice to have and is still free after all these years.

ePrint will be around for exactly as long as HP wants to support it.

Thanks, DragonFur; I've lived without it this long--sounds much more complicated than it would likely be worth, under the circumstances (and, my luck, they'll stop supporting it as soon as I sign on!). I appreciate your helpfulness, though!

You are welcome.

True - sometimes the answer is "This is more than it's worth to me".

ePrint has been around for a very long time.

The replacement (Print Anywhere) on newer eligible printers is perhaps better though very different in some ways.

Something to come back to if the mood strikes.

Happy Printing.
