Thank you!!

Actually I managed to get my printer to work again, following mlm0912's advise for disabling IPv6. That seems to be the issue with the new FW. Hopefully HP will fix it soon as I see quite a few people were affected by the rushed FW update in Oct.

The download for 20201021 is at https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-color-laserjet-pro-m280-m281-multifunction-print...  (click the Firmware link on page and then download).  This is what I have. It is working. I do not know how to get any other version.

This version was updated by the update process. I never had to change my firmware at any time. What I DID have to do is stabilize the printer by turning off the router as the printer powered up and then disabling IPV6. See discussion here for details.

Glad the printers are all working now.  Appreciate the kudos.  Just to be clear, credit for the IPV6 fix goes to Dairtel.  Take care and get in touch if I can be of further help.

Thanks Mim0912. Now that the time of all of us have suffered time wasted in coming up with a re-producible fix, let's remember we are in this discussion because of HP cluster-mess update.

So, it is time for HP to officially join in here with what they are doing at their end to test their updates with IPV4 only and to avoid resetting IPV6 preferences during update.  HP ... ?

I will add another acknowledgement that Disabling IPV6 seems to fix the issue.  I use a wired connection and every time I plugged in the ethernet cable the error popped up.  Disabling IPV6 seems to make the error go away and I can print again.

Thanks Dairtel 😀

I"m having same issue now and have followed all steps. My problem occurs though only when I plug the ethernet cable back in. once I do that the 79 service error comes up. I did the factory defaults. installed in firmware from HP (just download today). I then unplugged it from the computer USB put it back in it's spot and plugged ethernet back in. within less than 1 min the error popped up again. I'm at a loss what to do next. I have restarted all computers and the modem and switches and everything else connected. Please Help!.

Try disabling IPV6 in printer before plugging the ethernet back in. When you use factory defaults you are setting IPV6.

If the IPV6 solve does not work, then I would try steps I followed in previous posts including removing printer drivers and any software from all computers before proceeding so that nothing at all can connect to the computer via wifi or wired connection prior to updating the firmware.  My approach was to simulate as best as possible the printer being new out of the box and setting up from there.  Then altering some settings such as sleep and shutdown and auto updates prior to doing wired firmware install.  I hope this helps.

looks like disabling ipv6 does the trick Thanks Dmiltime for that. Only problem is that I cannot get it to print from all the computers lol

Same issue. Trying the disabling IPV6 now. Thanks for your help. I thought I was going crazy with the printer turning off and on continually.
