Hi @OFDFire,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be happy to help you!

If your HP LaserJet Pro M283cdw is not connecting locally or via Wi-Fi after a lightning storm and is displaying the error message "Fax hardware not installed or loose," here are some steps to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

1. Power Cycle the Printer:

  • Steps:
    1. Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
    2. Wait for about 60 seconds.
    3. Plug it back in and turn it on.

2. Check All Connections:

  • Ensure that all cables (power, USB, Ethernet) are securely connected.
  • Steps:
    1. Disconnect and reconnect the power cable and any other connections.
    2. If using Ethernet, ensure the cable is connected properly to both the printer and the router.

3. Perform a Hard Reset:

  • Sometimes, a hard reset can help clear temporary errors.
  • Steps:
    1. Turn off the printer and unplug it.
    2. Remove any installed cartridges.
    3. Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
    4. Reconnect the power, reinstall the cartridges, and turn on the printer.

4. Check for Error Messages:

  • If there are other error messages displayed on the printer, note them down, as they can provide more context on the issue.

5. Update Firmware:

  • Ensure that your printer has the latest firmware.
  • Steps:
    1. Visit the HP Support website and search for your printer model.
    2. Check for firmware updates and follow the instructions to install them if available.

Please find the remaining steps in the next post.

Hi @OFDFire,

Please find the next steps below.

6. Check the Fax Hardware:

  • Since the error message refers to fax hardware, ensure that:
  • Steps:
    1. If you’re not using the fax feature, you might be able to ignore the message. However, check if the fax port is damaged or if there's a loose connection.
    2. If you are using the fax feature, try reseating any connections related to the fax hardware.

7. Check Network Settings:

  • If your printer is not connecting to Wi-Fi, try reconnecting to the network.
  • Steps:
    1. Use the printer's control panel to access the network settings.
    2. Select Network Setup or Wireless Settings and reconnect to your Wi-Fi network.
    3. Make sure you enter the correct Wi-Fi password.

8. Try a Direct USB Connection:

  • If Wi-Fi is not working, try connecting the printer directly to your computer using a USB cable.
  • Steps:
    1. Plug in the USB cable and check if the printer is recognized by your computer.
    2. Install any necessary drivers if prompted.

9. Check Router Settings:

  • Ensure that your router is functioning correctly and is not experiencing issues after the storm.
  • Steps:
    1. Restart your router by unplugging it, waiting for 30 seconds, and then plugging it back in.
    2. Check if other devices can connect to the Wi-Fi network.

10. Inspect for Internal Damage:

  • Although you mentioned no visible damage, lightning storms can cause internal damage.
  • Steps:
    1. If you feel comfortable, you may want to open the printer (if it's out of warranty) and check for burnt components or loose internal connections.
    2. Otherwise, contact HP support for a professional inspection.

By following these steps, you should be able to troubleshoot the connection issues with your HP LaserJet Pro M283cdw after the lightning storm. If the problem persists, contacting HP phone support is recommended.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance
