Common problems for Connectivity Issues
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about Printer Wi-Fi, Connectivity Issues and Offline Status. Check out this link: HP printer is offline or unavailable.

I am using a LaserJet Pro M428 which is connected over WiFi with my network. Everything has been setup properly and I can print without any issues. So far so good. 👍🙂

But every night it seems that the printer looses wireless connection. It shows as disconnected every new day and I need to reconnect it. Reconnection does also work successfully either by simply switching off the printer and turn it on again ... or by disabling/enabling wireless connection on the printers display. After reconnection, it works perfectly. 👍

I did investigate the issue already and changed some of the settings, but none of them seemed to have any effect.
  • My wirless network is switched off for a few hours over night. I did manually disable and enable wireless network and the printer did successfully reconnect (I tested only with a few minutes being offline ... maybe the issue is when network is off for a longer period? Maybe the printer is not trying to reconnected after a certain number of connection trials?
  • I did switch off Wifi Direct Printing (was recommended in the manual)
  • I disabled DHCP and setup a fixed IP address. My wireless router was setup to always assign this fixed address to the printer. It also workes successfully, when restarting the printer
  • I disabled IPv6
  • I also had a look into syslog logging details, but there are a lot of error messages, the majority about dhcp settings and I am using a fixed ip
  • It is suspicious to me that the printers display shows no valid network name ("Not available") when being in this weird disconnected state. Maybe this got lost for some reason under some cirumstances? See display image below

Firmware of the printer seems to be the up-to-date. Update function on embedded web server page shows that it is latest version.

Does anyone have any idea? 🤔

It is simply annoying that I need to manually reconnect every new day. Once connected, the connection is stable the rest of the day, that's why I suppose some issue when wireless network is not available for a few hours overnight.

Thanks in advance for any help.

This may or may not be your problem but other users have experienced issues with compatibility with current 5Ghz wireless setups and often have to force the device to use only a 2.4Ghz wireless channel for reliable connection and printing. This requires setting a separate SSID for the 2.4Ghz channel and limiting the printer to connecting to it.

Thanks for the quick reply. 🙂

I will try to limit the printer to 2.4 GHz wireless connection and continue monitoring if it solves the issue.

Curious thing is that testing of wireless switching on/off was always successful (also with 5 GHz connectivity). Only when my wireless LAN is not available at night for some hours the printer does not seem to be able to re-establish the connection. To me it looks like different behaviour for short re-connects and after a longer offline phase. But that's just my suspicious guess.

Thanks again. I will reply here if it works and if it actually solved the problem.

... hmmm ... limiting wireless connectivity to 2,4 GHz obviously doesn't seem to solve the issue. ☹️

Printer already shows again disconnected state to network (not reachable from MacOS and also embedded web server not reachable in browser). 😒

I experimented a lot more with changed settings, but still always the same result. The printer does loose connection at any point in time and does not automatically re-connect. 😥

Why does it loose connection and why does it successfully connect on every startup? I am pretty sure this is an issue located in the printer, independent of the settings that I tried to tweak.

Anybody from HP around in this forum who might have an idea? 🙄

Any hints are greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
