Common problems for Connectivity Issues
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about Printer Wi-Fi, Connectivity Issues and Offline Status. Check out this link: HP printer is offline or unavailable.

it has been working fine but today I am receiving an error message saying connect printer. Cannot print press okay to connect printer and update status. When I press okay it tries connecting and then I received another message saying an update is in progress. This may take several minutes. You can check HP instant ink status by touching the ink icon from the home menu. I then press okay and nothing happens. I have tried reconnect it to the Wi-Fi and all is good there

Hi @CS189

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for sharing the details. I understand the situation clearly: the printer is showing a “Connect Printer” message, followed by “Update in progress,” but pressing OK does not move things forward even though the Wi-Fi connection is confirmed.

Let’s go through the steps to resolve this.

Restart the Printer and Network Devices

  • Power off the printer.
  • Restart your router and wait until the internet connection is stable.
  • Turn the printer back on and check if the update completes.

Check Printer Firmware Update

  • On the printer control panel, go to Setup or Settings.
  • Select Printer Maintenance > Update Printer > Check for Updates.
  • Allow the printer to complete any pending updates.

Verify Instant Ink Status

  • From the printer’s home screen, touch the Ink icon.
  • Confirm that the Instant Ink status is displayed correctly.
  • If the status does not load, wait a few minutes and retry.

Use the HP App

  • Open the HP App on your computer or mobile device.
  • Ensure the printer is added and connected.
  • From the app, check for firmware updates or run Diagnose & Fix to automatically resolve connectivity issues.

Reconnect the Printer to Wi-Fi (if needed)

  • On the printer control panel, go to Wireless Settings.
  • Select Restore Network Settings and then reconnect to your Wi-Fi.
  • Re-add the printer in the HP App.

The issue is linked to the printer attempting a firmware or Instant Ink update but not completing it. Restarting devices, checking for updates directly from the printer, and verifying through the HP App are the most effective steps. This ensures the printer reconnects properly and updates finish successfully.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
