HP LaserJet Pro M1217nfw Multifunction Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

In the printer display there is a double line entry of "No Strings in RO".  It appeared after installing a new router and trying to reconnect printer.  Currently the printer is unresponsive to control panel buttons and is not recognized by my computer. I have tried all the suggestions of try this or try that, which I could find, but to no avail.  This is an old printer but has worked flawlessly. According to posts, this problem goes back many years, and I can't believe a real fix has not been created.

Hi @BobZee,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're dealing with a frustrating issue with your HP M1217nfwMFP printer displaying "No Strings in RO" and becoming unresponsive after installing a new router. This error typically indicates a communication problem between the printer and the network.

Here are some steps you can try to resolve the issue.

Restart Printer and Router:

  • Turn off the printer and the router.
  • Wait for about 30 seconds.
  • Turn on the router first and wait for it to fully boot up.
  • Then, turn on the printer and allow it to initialize.

Check Network Settings:

  • Ensure that the printer is connected to the correct wireless network.
  • Verify that the wireless network settings (SSID, password) on the printer match those of your new router.

Reconfigure Wireless Settings (if necessary):

  • If the printer doesn’t automatically reconnect to the new router, you may need to reconfigure its wireless settings.
  • On the printer's control panel, navigate to the wireless settings menu. You may need to refer to the printer's manual for specific instructions on how to enter wireless setup mode and reconfigure the network settings.

Reset Printer's Network Settings:

  • Sometimes resetting the printer’s network settings can resolve connectivity issues.
  • Again, consult your printer's manual for instructions on how to perform a network reset. This usually involves pressing a combination of buttons on the printer's control panel.

Update Printer Firmware (if possible):

  • Check if there's a firmware update available for your printer. Updating the firmware can sometimes resolve network communication issues.

Check Firewall/Antivirus Settings:

  • Occasionally, firewall or antivirus settings on your computer/router may block the printer's communication. Temporarily disable them to see if the printer reconnects.

Factory Reset (as a last resort):

  • If none of the above steps work, you may consider performing a factory reset on the printer. This will reset all settings to their default and erase stored network information.
  • Note: Before performing a factory reset, make sure you have the printer's manual or access to online resources to guide you through the process.

If after trying these steps the issue persists, it could indicate a more serious hardware problem with the printer itself.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

I brought the printer to my local computer repair store and showed him the "No Strings in RO" on the display.  He said it indicates a hardware issue and not repairable as parts are not available.  I would be willing to try your recommendations, but, other than the first few steps, which I have already tried, it sounds like it is well beyond my technical capabilities.  Thanks for your suggestions.
