HP LaserJet Pro MFP M29w Printer
macOS 12.0 Monterey

Wi-Fi Direct is disabled. Resetting printer and network settings didn't work. So there is no password info when I print off a configuration report. I'm able to use "12345678" as the HP setup wifi password, but I've tried that password and "password" as suggested in another post. Neither of those work. I'm at a dead end, and I've been reading and watching tutorials for three hours.

Hi @andrealeigh,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your printer!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Since your HP LaserJet MFP M29W has Wi-Fi Direct disabled and resetting the network settings didn't restore it, try the following steps:

Re-enable Wi-Fi Direct via HP Smart App

Since resetting didn’t work, try enabling Wi-Fi Direct manually:

  1. Connect the printer via USB to your computer.
  2. Open the HP Smart app (Download from the HP website).
  3. Click Advanced Settings or Printer Home Page (EWS).
  4. Navigate to Network → Wi-Fi Direct.
  5. Enable Wi-Fi Direct and set a new password.

Restore Default Wi-Fi Settings (Different Method)

If the normal reset didn’t work, try this method:

  1. Turn the printer off.
  2. Press & hold the Wireless and Cancel buttons together.
  3. Turn the printer on while still holding the buttons.
  4. Release the buttons when the printer stops making noise.
  5. Wait for the Wi-Fi Direct light to turn on, then print a Configuration Page to check the new password.

Check the Embedded Web Server (EWS) for Password

If your printer has Wi-Fi Direct enabled but missing a password, try this:

  1. Connect your PC to the HP Setup Wi-Fi (DIRECT-HP-M29W using 12345678).
  2. Open a browser and go to http://192.168.223.1.
  3. Log in (Username: admin, Password: leave blank or try ‘admin’).
  4. Go to Network → Wi-Fi Direct → Check or Reset Password.

If the issue still persists, refer to the steps on this link to restore factory defaults.

Wi-Fi Direct is enabled. I can connect and print from my iPhone. But I can't connect on my MacBook.

Hi @andrealeigh,

If you can print from your iPhone via Wi-Fi Direct but not from your MacBook, the issue may be related to the way macOS handles network connections. Here’s what you can try:

Forget and Reconnect to Wi-Fi Direct

On your MacBook, go to System Settings → Wi-Fi.

Find DIRECT-HP-M29W and Forget this Network.

Restart your MacBook and printer.

Reconnect using Wi-Fi Direct password from the Configuration Page.

Manually Add Printer on macOS

If your Mac isn’t detecting the printer automatically:

Go to System Settings → Printers & Scanners.

Click + (Add Printer).

Choose IP and enter 192.168.223.1 (Wi-Fi Direct IP).

Select HP LaserJet MFP M29W from the list.

Reset HP Printing System on Mac

If the issue persists, reset the printing system:

Open System Settings → Printers & Scanners.

Right-click anywhere in the printer list → Reset Printing System.

Re-add the printer and try printing again.

Update macOS & Printer Drivers

Ensure macOS is updated to the latest version.

Download & install the latest HP Easy Start or HP Smart App from HP’s website.

I hope this helps.
