I have an HP 8610 inkjet printer that has worked well for many years on a ATT router. I have been trying to connect to an ASUS RT--BE82U and am receiving an error message that says my router has MAC address filtering turned on. After several days of testing (with both routers located in different houses miles apart) I think I have found the problem (but have not tested). The HP 8610 supports wifi 802.11b/g but the new router does not.
So my question. Is it possible that the HP 8610 is giving the MAC address filter error because it cannot properly communicate with the router? If that is true I see a few solutions (1. new printer, 2. ethernet cable router to printer, 3. a 2nd router that supports 802.11 b/g that is ethernet connected to the ASUS router).
Any thoughts on my theory? and solutions?
Thank you

Hi @wisg46,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Your theory is understandable, but there is an important detail: the HP OfficeJet Pro 8610 supports 802.11b/g/n on 2.4 GHz, not just 802.11b/g. The ASUS RT-BE82U also lists 802.11b/g/n support on its 2.4 GHz band, so the two devices are not inherently incompatible because of the Wi-Fi standard.
The MAC address filtering message is therefore more likely related to the ASUS router's security/filtering configuration rather than the printer being unable to communicate because of 802.11 compatibility. The RT-BE82U does have a Wi-Fi MAC filter feature.
Before replacing the printer or adding another router, I would recommend checking the ASUS router's Wi-Fi MAC Filter settings and making sure MAC filtering is disabled or that the printer's MAC address is allowed.
Also make sure you are connecting the 8610 to the 2.4 GHz network, since HP specifies 2.4 GHz wireless operation for this printer.
One other very practical option is the Ethernet connection you mentioned, the 8610 has a built-in Ethernet port, so you can connect it directly to a LAN port on the ASUS router and avoid the wireless compatibility/configuration entirely.
So, based on the specifications, I would not replace the printer or add a second router yet. I'd first check the ASUS MAC filtering and 2.4 GHz settings.
