HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw

hello,

we have been having issues with USB printing so we decided to run a network cable to this printer. it has never had a LAN connection before. the cable is good, a laptop can connect fine however the printer will not even get a link light.

all settings appear to have LAN enabled.

i have tried resetting by holding the screen at power up until the printer initializes. no help.

is there a deeper factory reset i can try or did we just get a bad printer?

Hi @cormanTX,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're dealing with a frustrating issue with the LAN connectivity of your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw printer. Here are some steps and considerations to help diagnose and possibly resolve the problem:

Check the Physical Connection:

  • Double-check the LAN cable connection at both ends (printer and network switch/router).
  • Ensure that the port on the router/switch where the printer is connected is active and set up correctly.
  • Try using a different LAN port on your router or switch.

Verify Printer Network Settings:

  • Access the printer's control panel and navigate to the network settings.
  • Make sure that the printer is set to use an Ethernet connection and not just wireless.
  • Check if the settings are configured to obtain an IP address automatically via DHCP or if it’s set to use a static IP address. If it's set to static, ensure the IP address is correct and not in conflict with another device.

Printer Hardware Reset:

  • You mentioned trying a reset by holding the screen during power-up. There's also a more comprehensive factory reset that can be performed through the printer's menu system:
    • On the printer's control panel, go to Setup.
    • Navigate to Service, and then select Restore Defaults.
    • Confirm the action to restore the printer to its factory settings.

Firmware Update:

  • Check if there’s a firmware update available for your printer. An outdated firmware can sometimes cause connectivity issues. You can find the latest firmware on HP's official website by entering your printer model.

Hardware Issue:

  • If none of the above steps help, there might be a hardware issue with the Ethernet port on the printer. Since the printer is designed to show a link light when connected correctly and it’s not showing up, the port might be defective.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
