I am unable to print anything I send from my old Chromebook.
It recognizes my printer and I see what I want printed. Click Print... and nothing.
HP indicates my printer as "expired", what does that mean?
Thank you for any help

Hi @MRWL,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you are facing an issue with your HP DeskJet Plus 4120 All-in-One Printer is being recognized by your Chromebook but won’t print, and HP is showing it as "expired," here’s what’s likely happening and how to fix it:
Possible Causes & Fixes
1. Printer Expired? (Instant Ink or HP+ Subscription)
- If you are enrolled in HP Instant Ink or HP+, and your subscription has expired (e.g., payment issue, trial ended, or HP+ is deactivated), your printer may not allow printing until it’s renewed or switched to standard cartridges.
- Fix: Log into your HP account (HP Smart) and check your subscription status.
2. Cloud Print is No Longer Supported
- Google Cloud Print was discontinued in 2020, and older Chromebooks relying on it won’t print.
- Fix: Try adding the printer via IP address instead of auto-discovery:
- Open Settings > Printers > Add Printer
- Select Add Printer Manually
- Enter the IP address (Find this on the printer’s control panel or router settings)
- Choose Generic PCL Driver
3. Printer Not Connected Properly
- Your Chromebook might recognize the printer but fail to send data due to connection issues.
- Fix:
- Restart the printer, Chromebook, and router.
- If printing via WiFi, check that the printer is on the same network as the Chromebook.
- Try connecting via USB cable and see if it prints.
4. Printer Queue Stuck
- If multiple jobs failed, the printer might be stuck in a queue.
- Fix:
- Go to chrome://print in the browser and clear the queue.
- Restart your Chromebook and try again.
5. Outdated Chromebook or Printer Firmware
- Older Chromebooks may need a firmware update for compatibility.
- Fix:
- Update Chromebook OS: Settings > About Chrome OS > Check for updates
- Update Printer Firmware via the HP Smart app or from HP’s support site.
Final Step: Factory Reset Printer (if all else fails)
- Resetting the printer can restore default settings and help reconnect.
- Hold the WiFi + Cancel buttons until the power light blinks.
- Reconnect the printer to WiFi and try again.
Let me know if any of these steps work or if you need further troubleshooting! 😊
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
