I've given up trying to make this printer/scanner work consistently and am fully prepared to take it outside, douse it in gasoline, set it on fire, and record the whole thing for the purposes of sharing it on social media, because at least then I'd have a positive experience with my HP printer/scanner.
The problems are too numerous to mention but they all fall under the umbrella problem of "reliability." I'd frankly welcome a problem that repeated itself consistently because then I could diagnose and fix it.
Instead, a typical session will involve me placing an item on the scanner glass, opening up HP Smart, which recognizes the printer at first and then... suddenly can't find it. I turn the printer off and back on. Now HP Smart recognizes the printer but tells me that it's already in use. Huh? I go to task manager and end all tasks involving the printer. I reopen HP Smart and now it doesn't recognize the printer again. Back to square one. All in all, scanning a single document, a task that should take a few minutes, takes a half hour. This is ROUTINE, and printing can be just as tedious an adventure as scanning.
For various reasons, it's clear that the problem has nothing to do with my network settings or laptops, because (a) other printers I've set up on the network work fine (and I've played with settings to even dedicate a static IP to the printer, it makes no difference); (b) it operates like this regardless of which of the four laptops I use to connect to the printer (some Windows 10, some Windows 11), and most importantly, (c) I previously had an HP 8600 printer on the same network that was perfectly reliable--it did exactly what a reasonable person would expect of it. The only variable is this Color LaserJet MFP M283, which is evidently garbage and should be avoided like the plague.
I'm outside my warranty so I'm not expecting any help here. This post is mostly self-therapy on my end, and to hopefully warn anyone off of purchasing a similar device from HP.

@tikk10, Welcome to the HP Support Community! I’m here to help.
I see that you have issues with printing and scanning using the HP Smart app and you have already tried many steps to resolve the issues with the printer. As the issue persists, let us perform an NVRAM reset.
- The reset instructions are specific for your printer and performing those steps on a different printer may corrupt the device.
- I've sent you a private message with reset instructions, follow the reset instruction to perform a full reset and re-initialize the printer.
- In order to access your private messages, click the private message icon on the upper right corner of your HP community profile, next to your profile Name or simply click on this link: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/notes/privatenotespage
Hope this helps! Let me know how it goes.

I've taken the exact steps you prescribed and nothing has changed. Scanning a single page on either the flatbed or feeder, a task which should take 2 minutes, winds up taking 20, after I've managed to clear a seemingly endless error message gauntlet ('Scanner Not Found,' even though HP Smart can clearly see it; 'Scanner Busy,' and so on and so on, [wait ten minutes] before scanner miraculously becomes found and works as intended).
Please also realize that I'm computer literate to the point where I can (and often do) dedicate static IP addresses to my devices within my home network. But my Color LaserJet MFP M283 is just as unreliable whether it has a dedicated IP or not.
It's not me, it's the Color LaserJet MFP M283. Why I've not yet opted to douse it in gasoline and document its fiery death is a personal failing, I feel, because it would give me immense pleasure. But then I'd have go to out and buy another printer, and they don't come cheap, as you know.
