HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

My HP Officejet Po 8720 was working fine yesterday.  It is connected to my Windows 11 Pro computer via a wireless network.  Today, it was disconnected from that network, and will not reconnect unless I input an 8-digit Network Security Key.  When I look on the router for a network security key, I don't find an 8-digit number.  I have a 15-digit "Network Key," which the connecting app will not accept as valid.  Any ideas would be a help.

Hi @Leadfoot_2222,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

When your HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 printer disconnects from the Wi-Fi network and requires an 8-digit Network Security Key to reconnect, it can be confusing if your router’s network key is a longer string. Here are some steps to troubleshoot and resolve this issue:

Steps to Reconnect HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 to Wi-Fi:

Verify Network Key:

  • Network Security Key (Password): The network security key is typically your Wi-Fi password. It may be labeled as "Wi-Fi Password," "Network Key," or "WPA Key" on your router.
  • Default Password: If you haven't changed the default Wi-Fi password, check the label on your router for the default password. This is usually found on a sticker on the router.

Printer Network Settings Reset:

  • Reset the network settings on your HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 to clear any saved Wi-Fi settings and start fresh.
  • On the printer’s control panel, go to Setup > Network Setup > Restore Network Settings or Restore Network Defaults.

Reconnect to Wi-Fi:

  • After resetting the network settings, go through the Wi-Fi setup process again on your printer.
  • On the printer’s control panel, go to Setup > Network Setup > Wireless Setup Wizard.
  • Select your Wi-Fi network from the list of available networks.
  • When prompted, enter the correct Wi-Fi password (the network key from your router).

Check Router Settings:

  • Ensure that your router is not using MAC address filtering, which could prevent the printer from connecting. If it is enabled, add the printer’s MAC address to the allowed list.
  • Make sure your router’s firmware is up to date.

Wi-Fi Frequency Bands:

  • Ensure that your printer is connecting to the correct Wi-Fi frequency band (2.4 GHz or 5 GHz). Many printers only support the 2.4 GHz band.

Update Printer Firmware:

  • Make sure your printer’s firmware is up to date. You can check for updates through the printer’s control panel or by visiting the HP Support website.

Reconnect via WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup):

  • If your router supports WPS, you can connect the printer using this method:
    • Press the WPS button on your router.
    • Within 2 minutes, press the WPS button on your printer or select WPS from the printer’s wireless menu.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
