My Color Laserjet M255dw printer often goes offline. It can then take an hour or more to get it printing again, and it "just comes back online". I have no idea what the reason is that it prints again. My LaserJet Pro M118dw NEVER exhibits this problem. I would like my Color printer to stay online, or know with certainty how to get it back online.

Hi @KNINEFN,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Dealing with a printer going offline can be frustrating, but there are several steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the issue with your HP Color Laserjet M255dw.
- Check Connection: Ensure that the printer is properly connected to your computer or network. If it's connected via USB, make sure the cable is securely plugged in. If it's a network printer, verify that the Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection is stable.
- Restart Printer: Sometimes, simply restarting the printer can resolve temporary connectivity issues. Turn off the printer, wait a few seconds, and then turn it back on.
- Update Firmware: Check if there are any firmware updates available for your printer on the HP website. Updating the firmware can often fix bugs and improve stability.
- Check Power Saving Settings: Some printers have power-saving features that can cause them to go offline when not in use for an extended period. Check the printer's settings and disable any power-saving features that may be causing the issue.
- Reset Network Settings: If the printer is connected via Wi-Fi, try resetting its network settings and reconnecting to your Wi-Fi network.
- Update Printer Drivers: Ensure that you have the latest printer drivers installed on your computer. You can download the latest drivers from the HP website.
- Check for Software Conflicts: Sometimes, other software or firewall settings on your computer can interfere with the printer's connection. Try temporarily disabling any firewall or antivirus software to see if it resolves the issue.
- Use a Static IP Address: Assigning a static IP address to your printer can sometimes help maintain a stable connection, especially on a network with dynamic IP addressing.
By following these steps, you should be able to troubleshoot and resolve the issue of your HP Color Laserjet M255dw printer going offline.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Alden - Many thanks for your kind and detailed response. I am connected to the printer via a wireless connection to my router. My other HP printer has never exhibited this behavior, so I thought it might be a printer-specific issue. I am hesitant to disable my firewall because sometimes this problem does not show up for days and I don't want my system to be vulnerable for several days.
I had not considered Power Saving as a possible factor. I'll have to fook for that setting on my printer,
I believe that the print driver is up to date, and likewise, the firmware, but I'll check those again.
I don't know how to reset my network settings, and am not comfortable messing with them every other connected device works flawlessly.
Finally, I have no idea how to step a static IP address , but will look into that because I have a project coming up later this year that may require that ability.
Thanks again,
KNINEFN
