my hp officejet 5255 won' print.  My grandson (home from college) said he downloaded everything I need.  Still the printer won't print if I send a document to it.  My grandson downloaded what he felt was necessary on Sunday.  Today, Tuesday suddenly the printer printed a document that was in line to be printed.  But when I sent a document after this surprise the printer would not print it.  I just want the little printer to print, and I don't know why it is being so unkind.

Hi @cak1046,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP OfficeJet 5255 printer may be experiencing an issue with communication or spooling documents. Here's a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot and resolve this.

Check the Basics

  • Ensure the printer is powered on and connected to the computer or network (via USB or WiFi).
  • Confirm there is paper in the tray and sufficient ink in the cartridges.

Set as Default Printer

On Windows:

  1. Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
  2. Locate your OfficeJet 5255, right-click it, and select Set as default printer.
  3. Try printing a test document.

On Mac:

  1. Open System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
  2. Ensure the OfficeJet 5255 is the selected default printer.

Clear the Print Queue

On Windows:

  1. Open Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
  2. Right-click your printer and select See what’s printing.
  3. Cancel all documents.
  4. Try printing again.

On Mac:

  1. Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
  2. Select your printer, then click Open Print Queue.
  3. Clear any stuck jobs.

Restart Printer Spooler Service (Windows)

  1. Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Find Print Spooler in the list.
  3. Right-click it and select Restart.
  4. Try printing a document.

Reinstall the Printer

If your grandson installed drivers or software, they might need to be reinstalled:

Uninstall the printer:

  • On Windows: Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers, right-click the printer, and select Remove device.
  • On Mac: Open Printers & Scanners, select the printer, and click Remove (-).

Download and install the latest drivers:

  • Visit the HP support page for OfficeJet 5255.
  • Download the full software package for your operating system.
  • Reinstall and set up the printer.

Test Different File Types

  • Try printing from different applications (e.g., Word, a PDF viewer, or Notepad/TextEdit).
  • This helps identify if the issue is specific to certain programs.

Update Firmware

  • Check for firmware updates for your printer:
    1. Go to HP’s support website.
    2. Search for your printer model and download any available firmware updates.
    3. Follow the instructions to install.

Try a Test Print

Send a test print directly from the printer’s menu:

  • Navigate to Settings > Reports or similar on the printer display.
  • Print a diagnostic report to confirm the printer is functional.

Check Network Connection (If Wireless)

  • Verify the printer is connected to the correct WiFi network.
  • Print a network configuration report from the printer menu to check connection details.
  • Ensure your computer is on the same network as the printer.

Reset the Printer

If all else fails, perform a factory reset:

  1. On the printer’s control panel, go to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Restore Factory Settings.
  2. Reconfigure the printer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
