HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdw

July 2020 I purchased my printer. It has worked well until this morning when I tried to print, the computer did not find the printer. I checked all connections, replaced the cords, changed USB ports on the computer, rebooted the computer and the printer, and ran a test report. My computer still does not find the printer.

Hi @Dillman,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP printer is not connecting to your computer, there are a few troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve the issue.

  • Check the connections: Ensure that the USB or Ethernet cable connecting your printer to the computer is securely plugged in on both ends. If you are using a wireless connection, make sure the printer is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your computer.
  • Restart both devices: Sometimes, a simple restart can fix connectivity problems. Turn off your printer and computer, wait for a few seconds, and then turn them back on.
  • Update printer drivers: Outdated or incompatible printer drivers can cause connection issues. Visit the official HP website and download the latest drivers for your specific printer model. Install the drivers on your computer and try connecting the printer again.
  • Run the HP Print and Scan Doctor: HP provides a free diagnostic tool called HP Print and Scan Doctor, which can help identify and resolve common printer connection issues. Download and run the tool from the HP website to see if it detects any problems and provides a solution.
  • Disable firewall or antivirus software temporarily: Sometimes, firewall or antivirus settings can block the printer from connecting to your computer. Temporarily disable any firewall or antivirus software you have installed and check if the printer connects.
  • Reset the printer's network settings: If you're using a wireless connection, try resetting the printer's network settings. Refer to the printer's user manual or the HP website for instructions on how to perform a network reset.
  • Check for Windows updates: Ensure that your computer has the latest Windows updates installed. Sometimes, updating your operating system can resolve compatibility issues with printers.
  • Try a different USB port or cable: If you're using a USB connection, try connecting the printer to a different USB port on your computer. Additionally, you can try using a different USB cable to rule out any issues with the cable itself.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
