HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 Wide Format All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

Our HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 is currently connected via ethernet for all our PCs and it functions as designed. Unfortunately, we did not realize "as designed" meant it was incapable of matching the functions of our old Officejet 8600.

We now have to scan documents to a USB thumbdrive in order to minimize trips from workstations to this printer. Scanning to "my computer" requires even more trips and causes much wasted time. We need the ability to scan directly to a drive (either NAS or an attached USB thumbdrive) and then access the scanned file(s) over the network.

On a hunch, I attached a laptop PC directly to the printer via USB cable (not ethernet), and the PC was able to read all files on the printer's USB thumbdrive with Windows Explorer while the thumbdrive was still in the front USB port on the printer. So a path thru the printer to the USB file is already there. But we are unable to do this over the network from any network attached PCs.

Our old Officejet 8600 could scan directly to a "Scans" folder on our NAS drives which were easily accessed by anyone on the network. That technique worked well for us and it would be the favored solution but being a former IT specialist myself, I know that would require programming by HP (not gonna happen). However, I DO think it should be possible to access the USB stick on the printer over the network.

This is a pretty important requirement for us. Need some help figuring out how to do it...

@crick616, Welcome to the HP Support Community! I’m here to help.

According to the printer specifications and the user guide, this model printer does not support scanning to a network folder/device.

You may scan to a memory device.

To know how, refer to page 41 of the user guide.

You may try to setup a scan to network folder as shown in this document from the EWS page of the printer.

Hope this helps! Let me know how it goes.
