Microsoft Windows 11

I  tried using the HP Smart app and it does not recognize my location, yet it shows in my location data that HP Smart accessed my computer.  I was wondering if I have to buy the ethernet/USB cord that was not included with my new printer.

Please advise.

Hi @sidestep,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand how frustrating this can be when you're trying to set up a new printer and run into connection issues where the printer is not able to find the location on the HP Smart app.

Let me help you get things working step by step.

Troubleshooting HP Smart Location/Detection Issue

Try the following steps:

1. Allow Location Access in Windows:

  • Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location.
  • Make sure Location Services is on.
  • Scroll down to "Let apps access your location" – turn HP Smart to On.
  • Restart the HP Smart app.

2. Connect Printer via USB for Initial Setup (if Wireless Fails):

  • Use a USB A-B printer cable temporarily.
  • Once connected, HP Smart should detect the printer and let you switch it to Wi-Fi mode.
  • After setup, you can remove the cable.

3. Alternative Method: Manual Wi-Fi Setup

  • Reset the printer’s wireless settings:
    • Press and hold the Wireless button (📶) + Cancel (✖️) button for 3 seconds.
    • This resets the wireless settings and prepares the printer for setup.
  • Reopen HP Smart and try “Add a new printer”.

I hope this helps.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
