HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdw

I've had my printer for six years and it suddenly lost the network connection.  I've tried setting up wi-fi via the wizard and it just hangs with the message "Retreving wireless network information" but never progresses to an actual network menu.  Wireless is working on all other devices.  I've tried everything already suggested on community such as restore settings, move closer to router, etc. Suggestions anyone?

Thanks!

Hi @Nowbrown2,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you're experiencing issues with the wireless connection on your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdw printer, and the setup wizard hangs with a "retrieving wireless network information" message, there are several steps you can try to resolve the problem.

Check Network Connection:

  • Make sure your printer is within range of your Wi-Fi router and that the router is functioning correctly.
  • Ensure that the printer's Wi-Fi indicator is lit up, indicating that it's connected to the network.

Restart the Printer:

  • Power off your printer, wait for a few seconds, and then power it back on. Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve connectivity issues.

Check Wireless Network Name and Password:

  • Double-check that you are using the correct SSID (Wi-Fi network name) and password when attempting to connect the printer to your wireless network.

Update Firmware:

  • Check if there are any firmware updates available for your printer on the HP website. Updating the firmware can sometimes resolve connectivity issues.

Reset Network Settings:

  • On the printer's control panel, navigate to the "Wireless" or "Network" settings.
  • Look for an option to reset the network settings or reconfigure the wireless connection. Follow the on-screen prompts to reset and reconfigure the network settings.

Router Troubleshooting:

  • Restart your Wi-Fi router to ensure it's functioning correctly.
  • Check if other devices can connect to the same Wi-Fi network without any issues.

Connect via WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup):

  • If your router supports WPS, you can try connecting your printer using the WPS method. Consult your printer's manual for instructions on how to do this.

USB Setup:

  • As an alternative, you can set up the printer using a USB connection to a computer. Once it's connected via USB, you can configure the wireless settings through the HP software on your computer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
