iPad Pro
macOS 12.0 Monterey

As of this morning two iPads and two iPhones are unable to print on HP 860 via WiFi or bluetooth.  The printer works on iMac via ethernet.  I have followed ALL of the steps to set up direct print via WiFi, which is connected, and the steps to set up AirPrint.  The last step of the AirPrint setup is to click a button to enable AirPrint, but the button remains gray and wiggles, but will not activate the AirPrint. I did see one direction, which said I must disconnect my ethernet, and then the WiFi Direct would work, but it all worked yesterday.  I found a list of HP printers that were AirPrint compatible, and this printer is not on that list.  However, again, I was printing via wireless yesterday, yet it doesn't work today.  Don't know what to do.

Welcome to the HP Community Forum.

This is a guess -- I don't have your printer model -- I do have a couple of iPads - one Pro and one Pro 12.9.

iPads (and other devices) are connected to our Dual Band network.

Assuming all else is equal -- and I agree that disconnecting the printer from Ethernet is something I've not had to do --

then

Try -- on the iPad(s) -- Switch OFF the location, Switch off the device,  Switch on the device > Switch ON your location monitor.

Load up HP Smart

If not done, sign into the app using your HP Account credentials

Then try to Add-Printer / Connect ...

What else?

I've add few connection issues -- but once in a while, it's just necessary to switch the iPad Wireless OFF -- wait a few seconds while it finds and connects to your mobile service -- then switch the Wireless back ON.

Reminder to those reading:  Switching the wireless off / wait / ON is not the same thing as switching from one SSID / frequency to a different band - frequency, of course.

Good News -- Airprint and HP Smart are both listed in the mobile printing document as supported for your printer model.

HP Printers - Using the HP Smart App (Android, Apple iOS)

Why is the printer offline or not showing up in HP Smart?

For example:  Check network and Web Services requirements if the printer connection is lost when using Print Anywhere.

Note:

Printer discovery and status updates can take up to 45 seconds. If you are on a cellular or different wireless network, wait several seconds and try again. Swipe down on the HP Smart home screen to force a refresh.

  • Make sure the computer or mobile device is connected to a local or cellular network with internet access.
  • Connect the printer to a wireless network with internet access and make sure Web Services is enabled.
  • You signed into the HP Smart app with the same credentials used to claim the printer on the HP Smart website.
  • Android: Enable location permissions for the HP Smart app, and make sure the printer was added to the HP Smart app while using the same wireless network as your mobile device.
