I have used this printer flawlessly for nearly 4 years with Instant Ink. When it reached EOL a few months ago, three Instant Ink subscription was automatically paused and I purchased cartridges. In order to use the printer, it says I need to connect to Web Services again, but every time I attempt it, I get the "cannot connect to server, Retry" message.
HP has resolved the issue about Instant Ink and I'm not happy to set up the subscription again. However, no matter what I do, the printer will not connect to Web Services. Reset many times. Used WiFi, Ethernet. Reset the router, though it has always worked fine with this printer.
Logged a support case today, and it was instantly closed by HP Support.
How do I get past the infinite number of Retry messages and simply connect this printer to Web Services again?

Same problem here. WiFi connection is stable wherever I place the 8040. But i can't print because I keep getting the "Cannot connect to server/Retry" message after being informed that I need to connect to the server in order to have Instant Ink status checked out . Resets and checking settings to make sure all is configured correctly don't solve the problem, and the printer won't print the jobs I send to it.

Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Assign a Manual IP address to the printer
• Obtain the IP address of the printer – You can touch the “wireless” icon on the printer control panel to obtain the IP address.
• Type the IP address at the top of your web browser to obtain the printer EWS page on your computer.
• Go to "Network" tab - General - Select "Network protocols" - Select "Enable IPv4 only" (or similar) - Apply the settings.
• Go to Network Setup > Ethernet/Wireless Settings > Advanced Settings > IP Settings > Select Manual IP
• You would be asked to enter the IP address, default gateway, Subnet Mask, Preferred and Alternate DNS
• For the IP address, say if your printer IP address is 192.168.0.3, try assigning a different IP address that is slightly in a different rage like 192.168.0.88
• Enter the default gateway and Subnet Mask values obtained from the network configuration page
• For the Preferred DNS use 8.8.8.8 and alternate DNS as 8.8.8.4
• Touch OK and save changes
