Pagewide Pro MFP 477dw

I woke up this morning to find there had been some kind of power cut. Everything in my home office was off - PCs, NAS, Monitor and of course my Pagewide Pro printer

One by one I switched everything back on and all seemed fine on the network - that is until I tried to print anything. Whilst Windows showed the printer as the active device, no document would print all and just sat in the print queue

I have reasonable tech knowledge (up to a point) so I checked the wireless settings on the printer and it had an IP address. When I logged onto my Asus router config page, it showed the printer as a connected device with the IP address that showed on the printer

From this point on, nothing worked. I have power cycled everythinhg and eventually uninstalled the HP printer software (a wrong move it appears)

I re-downloaded the HP software and drivers but when I try to install it as a wireless printer, it prompts for an IP address. Upon entering the  IP address I noted before it wont connect. I also note the message "PC network name (SSID) Unable to retrieve"

Please please can anybody think of a solution - why is my printer now invislble to my PC? I depend on my Pagewide Pro and im getting truly desperate here. I did have ace tech guy who could do anything with networks, but we lost touch

Perfectly happy to be called a tech fool, but Im really out of options

The printer got a different IP address than it had before the power outage that's why the computer won't connect to it.

Watch the reset video. After resetting, you generally have 2 hours to complete the setup. Decide if you want to connect the printer to the router or to print directly to the printer and bypass the router.

Many HP and other OEM printers have problems with the router when the router has two bands and both bands have the same name (SSID). Log into the modem and rename one of the bands. Alternately, contact your ISP and have them rename a band.

Or simply use Wi-Fi direct.

Wi-Fi direct video for m477

All documention is here for m477

All software is here for M477 series

Specification: M477

Let me know if you have a flex system (Wi-Fi boosters or repeaters) as the setup is much more complicated for routers.

I genuinely appreciate the swift reply, but the reset video was for a different model and all the icons were different - plus the text was in a foreign language (turkish?)

I ran the wireless setup wizard on the printer again and it connected first time with excellent signal strength. My asus router does have 2 signal bands but they have different names and have done for several years. Im pretty sure that the IP address now is the same as has been before

Im not familiar with Wifi direct....where does the have to be set up? PC, printer or router

Sorry about the reset video

This is the pagewide 477 reset

After a power outage, it is possible for the router to assign different IP addresses depending on the order in which the devices are powered up.

If you programmed the router to assigned fixed or reserved IP addresses then your printer would, of course, get the same IP address it had before.

Wi-Fi direct means the PC prints directly to the printer.  This can be done if the PC is a laptop or a desktop that has a Wi-Fi card.   The M477 supports only the 2.4ghz band so any device printing directly to it needs to be on the 2.4ghz band.

The printer needs to be on the same subnet as the rest of your devices unless they use AirPrint or Wi-Fi direct.
Check the IP4 address of your computer and then get a network printout and see if both the printer and the computer are on the same network.

Using the windows command prompt, copy and paste the following into the CMD window

ipconfig | find /i "ipv4"

should look something like the below

BeemerBiker_0-1729968321930.png

For MacOS this article explains how to get the IP address

Get a printer network report. The PINs and Passwords should show up. Here is the important stuff from a typical printer report. The password shown in Wi-Fi can be the printers PIN or the modem's password depending on how you connected to the modem. The printer can have two bands but the only one that is connected will show up.

LANSTATUSIP addressSSIDPassword
Wi-Fienabled192.168.1.15ATT-ARRIS-2 .4GuessAgain
Wi-Fi-directenabled192.168.23.1DIRECT-WHATEVERBadGuess
Wireddisabled
USBdisabled

Note that the printer and the computer are both 192.168.1
This means they are on the same subnet. If they are not on the same subnet then the router needs to be allowed to transfer data from one subnet to the other.  This usually happens automatically unless using VPN or some fire wall protection

Well thanks again for the new reset video...this time the reset appears to have worked. Took around 20 mins, printed several calibration pages then a final nice colour print

Only trouble is, nothing has changed. I ran the network setup wizard and it connected to 192.168.1.69 quickly with excellent signal strength. When I tried to run the HP software installation, it does not see the printer, and manually entering the IP address failed again

Im at a loss....presumably its a setting on my PC that needs changing, but I have to admit networks are a bit beyond me

I really thought I had it this time but no.....

I went and uninstalled all the HP software I had on my system and rebooted. Ran the driver installer and wow! this time it listed the PagewidePro and the 192.168.1.9 address. I selected it and clicked next.....

Unfortunately it went to "Installing network device" and a green bar just contimually passed accross the screen until it eventually failed

Thought I had cracked it but no 😞

A printer driver needs to be installed only once on a PC or laptop.

To uninstall or remove a printer use the printui application

Run the following app from the command line

printui /s

remove any all all references to the printer:

Full feature driver software for the 477dw can be downloaded here

I found it here

Manuals are here

Install the driver and bring up Printers and Scanners and "find" the printer.

If you suspect damage to the printer then try connecting an ethernet cable to the router or a USB cable directly to PC.

Okay...no sleep through worry over this....

Followed the above instructions and deleted all references to HP printers. Tried to reinstall the HP software package but failed. It sees the printer under the correct IP address but when I select it and continue it hangs on "Installing Network Device"

Under the Windows Settings page it comes up with the name of my printer, but when I click "Add device" it just sits there saying "Connecting"

On the assumption I need to start spending money, would it work to replace my PC network card with a dual socket one and connect the printer via a ethernet cable?

I hadnt suspected damage as the printer printed all the calibration pages during the reset. It also connects to my wireless router instantly. Its just my PC refuses to see it or install the printer software

Oh the joys of being self-employed, with work waiting to go out the door once printed!

Again.....thought I was making progress but no

Tried using HP Smart to set up the printer. It instantly saw my Pagewide at 192.168.1.9 and showed it online. However when I click to set it up it returns an error saying the printer must be turned on to continue. Needless to say it is turned on......arrrgh!
