Hi @ricnifo,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I see that you are facing an issue with scanning on your printer when connected to network.
A) Please follow the steps below to perform a power drain.
1) Take out the cartridges
2) Unplug the power cord from the printer & wall.
3) Press and hold the power button down for 15 seconds and release the power button, wait for about 30 seconds.
4) Plug the power cord back into the printer and wall, ensure the printer is plugged into the wall & not into a surge protector.
5) Insert the cartridges back into the printer.
Remove the cartridges > Unplug the power cord > Wait for 30 seconds > Plug the power cord back in > Insert the cartridges
B) Kindly refer to the steps on this link to update the printer firmware and let me know if that resolves the issue.
C) If the issue still persists, please follow the steps below to connect your printer to the network again.
1) Uninstall the HP smart app by click on this link, Restart the computer or mobile device to clear possible error conditions.
2) Enable Wi-Fi setup mode: When you turn on your printer for the first time, it is temporarily placed in Wi-Fi setup mode so that it can be discovered during setup. Use the printer control panel to restore Wi-Fi setup mode, and then set up the printer again. Go to Restore Wi-Fi setup mode on your HP printer for more information.
3) Refer to this link to use the HP smart app on your phone/tablet/PC to add a printer.
Note: Enable Bluetooth for an HP Smart app setup: Enable Bluetooth on your computer or mobile device so that HP Smart can detect the printer during the setup.
Please mark this post as “Accepted Solution” if the issue is resolved and if you feel this reply was helpful click “Yes”.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day

Thank you Irwing6 for your kind and quick response and detailed suggestions. I beleive that the supporters who tried to help me were not able to resolve problem, probably because they did not pay careful attention to the description of the problem, which I tried to describe in detail by sending some control panel screens and several printer report pages.
I want to describe the problem again. My printer worked fine with both USB and Wireless connections (Wireless printing only). I needed to scan via Wireless but the printer seemed to need specific drivers (Twain ??? ) that Windows 10 didn't show in the printer and scanner configuration page. An attempt to update the drivers resulted in deleting all the printer's wireless connection parameters by eliminating the INFRASTRUCTURE mode and setting it to AD-HOC mode. Neither suggestions on the HP Support pages, nor available diagnostic tools were able to access the printer's EWS (Embedded Web Server) to reconfigure the network address which showed the following data:
Network Status: Offline
Active Connection Type: None
URL for embedded Web Server: http://0.0.0.0
Hostname: HP65EAD7
Admin Password: Not Set
802.11 Wireless Status: Disconnected
I chatted with the last support technician for more than two hours without solving anything. In conclusion, he failed to resolve the issue, responded incoherently by stating the following (copied from its statement):
“because the printer is end of support, that's the reason we couldn't setup the printer using Wi-Fi. We need the drivers to setup the printer to Wi-Fi but. You can only use the printer with USB connection”.
I don't want to be polemical, but the answer provided is not adequate. When the warranty expires, HP printers do not lose their hardware and software abilities, nor lose their functions. Furthermore, if what the technician said is true, why did he make me waste two hours of my time needlessly when he could have immediately declared that he could not provide support?
Thank you again for your support, but I persevered to tacle the issue and managed to solve my problem on my own. After several attempts I discovered that the printer in AD-HOC mode had its own SSID which was enough to set this SSID in my Router to see the printer and its network address again, enter the EWS and reconfigure the Infrastructure mode connection parameters. By doing this the printer is visible and works again with wireless connection. The only problem remaining is that with the wireless connection allows me to print but not to scan. The only way to scan wirelessly is through the printer's Webscan application by entering the EWS with its network address.
Apart from the Vuescan application which somehow manages to see the scanner part of the printer even without drivers (using its own), I have not found any possibility to scan via Wireless with other Video Capturing programs that acquire images from scanners ( Twain). To conclude can you please give me some suggestion some suggestions for viewing and using the HP C4780 scanner wirelessly? Thank you.

I'm sorry to say that your suggestion wasn't helpful in solving my problem. The link you suggested I now know by heart and there are no drivers for the printer. I also tried Scan Doctor which identifies the printer wirelessly (which by the way works correctly) and its online status, but it is not able to solve the problem. Apart from the online status, all the other tests failed, declaring a problem in the Twain driver and continuing to request the restart of the computer which after the restart does not solve anything.
It also reports that the tool did not find the HP Solution Center needed to scan and suggests reinstalling the printer software from the original CD including the HP Solution Center and the Imaging HP Device.
HP states that “HP Solution Center is a printer management program for HP printers manufactured before 2010. HP Solution Center does not work when Flash software is not active on your system. Since Flash is no longer supported, HP Solution Center is also no longer supported.” The alternative Imaging Capture software suggested on HP pages are no longer available.
HP smart cannot identify the printer and only recognizes it if I manually enter the network address. Then the tests fail the same way they fail with Scan Doctor.
I do not know what to do. I think I tried every possibility I knew. However, I have not tried reinstalling the software from the original CD which unfortunately I can no longer find. Do you have the possibility to send me a link where I can download its ISO image? Thank you

Hi @ricnifo,
I am sorry to hear that the above steps did not help much but those are the only software options available for you to use your printer as it is obsolete.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a great day ahead!

the problem was not resolved although several support technicians (whom I thank) tried to help me by providing me with general information that I had already found on my own on the HP support site without even bothering them. However, I can't believe that a printer that can scan wirelessly can't be used even at the end of technical support. I have to note that HP support is not flexible and very formal. Only one driver would have been enough, I don't think that support has thrown away everything regarding obsolete products. I'm quite disappointed with HP support but I'll get over it.
