Microsoft Windows 11

I've spent hours trying to install my HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 printer on my new laptop, but I get an error saying the PlugPlay is not enabled.  I look in my serice list and the Plug and Play is not listed.  What's the solution?

Hi @tlangley,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

It sounds incredibly frustrating to spend hours troubleshooting a basic installation, only to be blocked by a missing Plug and Play service, especially when you're just trying to get your printer working on a new laptop.

 1. Confirm "Plug and Play" Service Status:

  • Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and hit Enter.
  • Look for Plug and Play in the list.
    • If it's there, right-click and select Start (or Restart) if not already running.
    • Set Startup type to Automatic.

 2. If "Plug and Play" is Missing:

  • The service may be disabled or missing from the system registry.
  • Open Command Prompt as Administrator, and type:

Cmd: sc config plugplay start= auto

          sc start plugplay

  • Reboot your system afterwards.

3. Run HP Print and Scan Doctor:

  • Download it from HP’s official website.
  • It can automatically detect and fix many issues, including services not running.

4. Check Device Manager:

  • Ensure the printer shows up under Printers or Other Devices.
  • Right-click > Update Driver or uninstall and reconnect via USB/Wi-Fi.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thanks for your help, but:

1. Plug and Play does not appear in the Services list

2. When I try your directions in the cmd prompt, it failed

tlangley_0-1746193105325.png

3. After a couple more hours dealing with HP Print Doctor, HP Easy, etc, etc, I have 2 of 3 printers connected and printing, even though I had to buy a new HP printer.  My Brother laser printer is still not connecting.

4. In Device Manager, 2 printer drivers are listed, HOWEVER, under System devices, there is "Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator"

Can you, or anyone, explain how I get the plug and play feature installed and enabled?

TIA
