HP OfficeJet Pro 8035e All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

I have printed for several years with this printer over vpn.  I did get a new laptop this year, but it worked until a couple days ago.  Now it doesn't connect to the printer either wirelessly or connected.  It says it is going to print, but never gets to the printer.  I have turned it off, disconnected power, done everything to my limited knowledge.

Hi @BG13432,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thanks for explaining the situation. Printing over VPN can be tricky because VPNs often block local network traffic, and your new laptop might have stricter network settings. Since it worked before and suddenly stopped, here’s how to troubleshoot:

Step 1: Check Printer Status

  • On your HP OfficeJet Pro 8035e, print a Network Configuration Page
    • From the printer control panel: Setup > Reports > Network Configuration.
  • Confirm the printer is connected to your Wi-Fi and shows an IP address.

Step 2: Test Printing Without VPN

  • Disconnect the VPN and try printing.
  • If it works without VPN, the issue is VPN routing blocking local traffic.

Step 3: Add Printer Using IP Address

  1. Go to Settings > Bluetooth & Devices > Printers & Scanners.
  2. Click Add a printer or scanner.
  3. If your printer doesn’t appear, select Add manually.
  4. Choose Add a printer using TCP/IP address.
  5. Enter the printer’s IP from the Network Configuration Page.

Step 4: Update Drivers

Step 5: VPN Settings

  • Enable Split Tunnelling in your VPN client so local traffic (printer) bypasses VPN.
  • Or add your printer’s IP to the VPN’s allow list.

Step 6: Restart Everything

  • Restart the printer, router, and laptop.
  • Ensure printer firmware is up to date via the HP app.
