I could print wireless from my laptop with no problem until I went on HP Smart to see if I could use instant ink.
My model printer won't work with this. So after coming off the site I seem to be locked on to HP website, given a password I can't remove and cannot print wireless. How do I free my printer.

@Melody71, Welcome to the HP Support Community!
When you installed the HP smart app, you would have created an HP account with a password. Use the same password.
Did you try reinstalling the HP smart app from the Microsoft Store?
Reset the printer
- With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
- Wait at least 60 seconds.
- Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
- Turn ON the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
- Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.
Note: HP recommends connecting the printer directly to a wall outlet rather than a surge protector or a power strip.
Try making a standalone copy and check if that works. By this, we can conclude if this is a hardware or a driver issue.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Hi Kumar0307,
I have tried the procedures. unplugging etc. I have made a standalone copy and that worked.
However, printer is still locked in to the other website.
So I can't print wirelessly.
I can't remember as to where I download HP SMART. I have also before your suggestions reinstalled the programme for my printed several times from your website.
So issue not solved yet.

Where do you see the printer locked?
If you are able to make a copy, it means the printer hardware is working fine.
How is the printer connected to the computer?
Click here to download the HP Full-feature driver.
Once downloaded, make sure to run the file to start the installation and follow the on-screen instructions.
Try printing.
Let me know how it goes.

Hi Kumar0307,
The printer is completely functioning and printing when connected by cable from computer to printer.
It will not however print wirelessly however even though the blue wireless light is completely stable. Also, it won't print from my smart phone.
What appears to have happened is another website (HP) has overridden my wireless network password has given by my router.
I printed out HP Network configuration page and the details were:
Wireless direct
Status on
Security on
Passcode 61110646
SSID HP-Print-A8-Deskjet 2540 series
Hardware address 02:ba:d0:20:40:81
URL for Embedded web server
IP Address 192.168.223.1
Channel 6
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
These details overtook my Network and disabled my wireless printing and have over-ridden my password and ssid
Maybe if I could find an original CD to set up my printer and completely wipe the latest received software I might be able to make wireless
function again?

This is not a software/driver issue. Reinstalling it will not help.
The network/website you are referring to is called wifi-direct. This feature is inbuilt in the printer. This is used in case you do not have a wireless router.
Use the WPS method to connect the printer to your wireless router - Connecting an HP Printer Using Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS)
- Make sure the printer and the PC are connected to the same wireless network. Either 2.4 or 5GHz network.
- If you have a Dual-band router and both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks share the same name/SSID, the printer will not be able to connect to the network. In this case, contact your Internet service provider to assign different names to both the networks.
Let me know how it goes.
