Got a new modem from Optimum - 5G.  I came to understand my printer works only on 2.4, so Optimum added that network in.  But the printer isn't connecting, and isn't seen in my MacBook settings - at all. There's nothing on the list.   I've restarted the modem several times and unplugged and plugged in the printer several times as well - same problem.  Pleeeease help.  thanks!

Hi @Naomin

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Let’s go step by step to get your printer connected to Wi‑Fi again. Since your printer only supports 2.4 GHz, we’ll focus on ensuring it connects properly to that network.

Confirm 2.4 GHz Network Availability

  • On your modem/router, verify that the 2.4 GHz SSID (network name) is visible and broadcasting.
  • Make sure the SSID is different from the 5 GHz one so the printer can distinguish it.

Printer Network Reset

  • On the printer control panel, go to Setup → Network Setup → Restore Network Settings (wording may vary slightly).
  • This clears any old Wi‑Fi settings so you can start fresh.

Reconnect Printer to Wi‑Fi

  • On the printer, navigate to Wireless Setup Wizard.
  • Select the 2.4 GHz SSID from the list.
  • Enter the Wi‑Fi password carefully (case‑sensitive).
  • Wait until the printer confirms it is connected.

Check Printer Status

  • Print a Wireless Network Test Report from the printer’s control panel.
  • Ensure the report shows “Connected” and the correct SSID.

MacBook Setup

  • Restart your MacBook after the printer connects.
  • Open System Settings → Printers & Scanners.
  • Click the + button to add the printer.
  • If the printer does not appear automatically, select Add Printer by IP and enter the printer’s IP address (found on the Wireless Network Test Report).

Additional Checks

  • Ensure your MacBook is also connected to the same 2.4 GHz network.
  • If your modem/router has “Smart Connect” enabled (combining 2.4 and 5 GHz under one SSID), disable it temporarily so the printer can connect specifically to 2.4 GHz.

Try these steps in order. The most critical part is making sure the printer is reset and reconnected directly to the 2.4 GHz SSID. Once that’s done, your MacBook should be able to detect it.
