Mac Air
macOS 11.0 Big Sur

I got a new ASUS router a couple of weeks ago - couldn't find the printer,  Downloaded HP SMART and finally got it to work after many reinstall/uninstall.  Today printer worked and then suddenly lost connection after I had to switch WIFi to backup files on TimeCapsule.  When I switched back, printer would not. reconnect,. The wireless network test report says the printer is not connected to my wifi..

I have

  • Reset the Printer to Previous settings
  • Reset the WPS
  • Tried connecting with HP Smart

Above steps tried many times over a 3 hour period.  Printer will not connect

Found a work around myself.

  1. Got my old windows computer
  2. Downloaded HP Toolbox
  3. Reinstalled printer with cable which doesn’t fit the Mac
  4. Asked to set up wireless
  5. Went into Wireless/Networking setting to reassign SSID
  6. Changed Mac to that wireless
  7. Now it works. Hopefully the connection will hold

i just don’t understand why  the Printer changed the SSID which was the problem

why does hp assume everyone wants to use a wireless connection??   especially when half the time it fails.  so all the trouble shooting requires & deals with wireless.  what about a hard connection trough a network?

You misunderstood  Mac needs wireless as does my iPhone and iPad. There is no cable for my older HP printer. There is no printer touch screen to make changes. You have to do it on a cable connected computer. Yes. HP loses the wireless connection a lot. Yes for some reason the printer changed the router SSID by itself
