I had the printer linked by wifi but it kept losing the connection when turned off, so I decided to put in a wired connection, but I can't get it to work via HP Smartprint (I can if I print via HP Smart Tank). I'm not totally sure I've got the right cable, though looking on the internet, I'm using a USB A to USB b cable, which seems to be correct.

I did uninstall the printer before trying to connect again. 

When I try to print through HP Smart Print, there is a delay then I get "print job paused, printer offline" even though it is switched on.

It sounds like you're experiencing issues with setting up a wired connection for your HP Smart Tank 7605 printer using HP Smart Print. Here are a few steps and considerations to help resolve the issue:

Verify Cable Type and Connection:

  • Ensure you're using a USB A to USB B cable, which is the standard for most printers.
  • Connect the USB A end to your computer and the USB B end to the printer securely. Avoid using a USB hub in between to prevent connection issues.

Install or Reinstall Printer Drivers:

  • Visit the HP Support Page and download the latest drivers for your HP Smart Tank 7605.
  • Install the drivers while the printer is connected via USB.

Use HP Smart App:

  • If HP Smart Print is giving issues, consider using the HP Smart app instead. It provides comprehensive functionality including setup and management.
  • Download the HP Smart app from the HP Website or your app store and use it to configure your printer.

Add Printer Manually:

  • Go to your computer's printer settings.
  • Add a new printer and make sure to select “USB” as the connection type.

Check Firewall and Security Settings:

  • Sometimes firewall settings can prevent a successful connection. Ensure that your security settings don’t block the printer.

Try Another USB Port or Cable:

  • Test with a different USB port on your computer or try another USB cable to rule out any hardware issues.

Restart Devices:

  • Restart both your printer and computer after making connection changes to see if the issue resolves.
