The printer appears in my Printers & Scanners, showing as "Idle, Default."  When I try to print, it searches for the printer and then says, "Cannot connect to printer."

@BobW1957, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

When your HP Envy 5664 e-All-in-One Printer shows as "Idle, Default" but you are unable to print, try the following troubleshooting steps:

Check Printer Status

Make sure the printer is turned on and connected to the same network as your computer.

Restart Devices

  1. Restart the Printer:
    • Turn off the printer and then turn it back on.
  2. Restart your Computer:
    • Restart your computer to refresh the connection settings.
  3. Restart the Router:
    • Turn off your router and then turn it back on after 30 seconds.

Verify Printer is Online

  1. Windows:
    • From the Start menu, go to Devices and Printers.
    • Right-click your printer’s icon, and select See what's printing.
    • In the print queue window, click Printer in the menu bar and make sure Use Printer Offline is unchecked. If it is checked, click it to uncheck it.
  2. Mac OS X:
    • Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
    • Select the printer and ensure it is listed as Idle or Ready.

Check Network Settings

Ensure your printer and computer are connected to the same wireless network:

  1. Print Network Configuration Page:
    • From the printer control panel, print a Network Configuration page to check the connection status.
  2. Verify Network Connection:
    • Make sure the SSID (network name) on the Network Configuration page matches your network.

Re-run Wireless Setup Wizard

If the issue persists, you may need to re-establish the connection using the Wireless Setup Wizard:

  1. On the printer’s control panel, go to the Wireless or Setup menu.
  2. Select Wireless Setup Wizard and follow the on-screen instructions to reconnect the printer to your network.

Run HP Smart:

Update Printer Firmware (Update the firmware on an HP printer | HP® Support)

  • Go to the HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads page. Enter your printer model number and search for the latest firmware update. Follow the instructions to download and install the firmware update.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.
