Hi @Gary400

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand how frustrating it must feel to see “Printer in error state” after setting up your HP Envy 7640 for wireless printing. You’ve already taken steps to connect it, and I appreciate the effort you’ve put in.

Let’s go through a clear set of actions to help bring the printer back to a ready state:

Step 1: Power Cycle

  • Turn off the printer and unplug the power cord from the rear.
  • Wait at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug the cord back in and power on the printer.
This refresh clears temporary communication glitches.

Step 2: Check Printer Status

  • On the printer’s control panel, confirm there are no error messages (such as paper jam, low ink, or carriage block).
  • Ensure the printer is on the home screen and not stuck in a setup prompt.

Step 3: Verify Connection

  • On the printer, tap Wireless icon and confirm it shows “Connected” with your network name.
  • If not, reconnect to your Wi-Fi using Wireless Setup Wizard.

Step 4: Run Diagnose & Fix in HP App

  • On your Asus Vivobook (Windows), open the HP App.
  • Select your printer, then go to Printer Settings > Diagnose & Fix.
  • Allow the tool to run; it will automatically repair common issues like driver conflicts or offline status.

Step 5: Update Printer Driver

  • Outdated drivers can trigger “error state” messages.
  • Download and install the latest driver for HP Envy 7640 from HP’s support site:
HP Envy 7640 Printer Drivers and Software

Step 6: Set Printer as Default

  • On Windows, press Windows + R, type control printers, and press Enter.
  • Right-click your HP Envy 7640 and select Set as default printer.
  • Try printing a test page.

Step 7: Clear Print Queue

  • Open Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
  • Right-click your printer and select See what’s printing.
  • Cancel all pending jobs, then retry printing.

If the issue continues, the combination of updating drivers and using the Diagnose & Fix tool usually resolves “error state” conditions.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
