Common problems for Connectivity Issues
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about Printer Wi-Fi, Connectivity Issues and Offline Status. Check out this link: HP printer is offline or unavailable.

HP OfficeJet Pro 8028e All-in-One Printer

Over the past 2 years, I've had 3 printers. All of them with the same issue.  They go offline and I spend hours trying to get them back online, to print a document and I'm done!

I've restarted, reinstalled, done everything every tech has said and the darn printers still do not stay online.  Is it changing IPs?  I think that may be the problem.  However, the solutions posted by HP reps don't work for me.  And, if all of the HP printers are having this issue, and it's this hard to correct, there are serious system issues HP needs to address.  We just want the machine to do like our other machines have done for YEARS without this issue.  Before this past 2 years and revolving printers trying to find one that will stay online, I printed wirelessly for over 10 years w/o a single issue.  I could print from my phone in the garage if I wanted and my printout would be waiting for me.  Now I can't print anything without hours of trying.

Please give me a solution.  Are other brands having this same issue?  Is it just HP? I've been a loyal supporter for literally 39 years and I'm beyond frustrated.

Hi @tjcalli,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Dealing with printers that frequently go offline can be incredibly frustrating, especially when you've tried multiple models and followed various troubleshooting steps without success. Here are some steps and suggestions to help you resolve the issue, with a focus on the potential IP address conflict.

Set a Static IP Address for Your Printer

Dynamic IP addresses can cause connectivity issues if the IP address of the printer changes. Setting a static IP address can help stabilize the connection.

Steps to Set a Static IP:

Find the Current IP Address of Your Printer:

  • On the printer, navigate to the Network Settings or Network Setup menu.
  • Print a Network Configuration Page to find the current IP address.

Access Your Router’s Configuration Page:

  • Open a web browser and type in the IP address of your router.
  • Log in with your router’s username and password.

Assign a Static IP:

  • Find the DHCP settings (usually under LAN or Network settings).
  • Add a DHCP reservation using your printer’s current IP address and MAC address.
  • Alternatively, you can set the static IP directly on the printer through its network settings.

Update Printer Firmware

Make sure your printer’s firmware is up to date, as updates can fix bugs and improve connectivity.

Steps to Update Firmware:

  • Go to the HP website and download the latest firmware for your HP OfficeJet Pro 8028e.
  • Follow the instructions to install the firmware on your printer.

Check for Network Conflicts

Ensure no other devices are causing conflicts on your network. Sometimes, other devices might be trying to use the same IP address as your printer.

Adjust Power Settings

Printers sometimes go offline due to power-saving settings.

Steps to Disable Power Saving Mode:

  • Go to the printer’s settings and find the power-saving or sleep mode options.
  • Set the sleep timer to a longer period or disable it altogether.

Use a Wired Connection

If possible, try connecting the printer directly to your router using an Ethernet cable. This can provide a more stable connection than Wi-Fi.

Reconfigure Printer on Network

Remove the printer from your network and re-add it to ensure a fresh setup.

Steps to Reconfigure:

Remove the Printer:

  • On your computer, go to Printers & Scanners.
  • Remove the HP OfficeJet Pro 8028e from the list.

Re-add the Printer:

  • On the printer, go through the wireless setup wizard to reconnect it to your network.
  • Add the printer back to your computer using the IP address.

Ensure Router Compatibility and Performance

Make sure your router’s firmware is up to date and that it’s not overloaded. Sometimes, older or overloaded routers can cause connectivity issues.

Check HP Smart App

Use the HP Smart App to manage and troubleshoot your printer. This app can sometimes provide more detailed insights and troubleshooting steps.

By setting a static IP address and ensuring your printer firmware and router firmware are up to date, you can often resolve issues with printers going offline.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
