Hi @Vincent2003,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you are facing an issue with your HP Photosmart C4780 when the cartridges move to the right could indicate a mechanical issue with the carriage mechanism.
Here's how to troubleshoot this issue:
Step 1: Check for Obstructions
- Turn off the printer and unplug it.
- Open the cartridge access door to reveal the ink carriage.
- Inspect the carriage path for any paper debris, small objects, or obstructions that might block the carriage from moving smoothly.
- Manually move the carriage to the left or right if possible to check if it gets stuck or hits anything.
- Remove any obstructions if you find them, and make sure no pieces of paper are caught inside.
Step 2: Check the Cartridges
- With the printer off, remove the cartridges from the carriage.
- Reinsert the cartridges properly, ensuring they snap into place securely.
- Close the access door and turn the printer back on to see if the noise persists.
Step 3: Reset the Printer
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Wait for about 60 seconds.
- Plug the printer back in and turn it on to check if the noise is resolved.
Step 4: Lubricate the Carriage Bar (Optional)
If the carriage movement seems stiff or noisy, you can use a dry lubricant (such as silicone spray) to lightly lubricate the carriage bar.
- Turn off the printer and unplug it.
- Open the cartridge access door, and locate the metal carriage rod on which the cartridges move.
- Apply a small amount of dry lubricant to the rod, ensuring not to over-apply or let any lubricant touch the ink cartridges.
Step 5: Run a Printer Diagnostic
If the noise persists, it might be helpful to run a self-diagnostic test or a printer reset. You can refer to the printer manual or HP's support page for guidance on performing a diagnostic.
Refer to this document: HP Photosmart C4780 All-in-One Printer User manual
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
