When my HP Office Jet Pro 8138e is connected to the network using Ethernet, the printer goes offline. The only way to print is by disconnecting the Ethernet cable and use WiFi. Why?

@Ma176, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP OfficeJet Pro 8138e is going offline when connected via Ethernet but works fine over Wi-Fi, it typically indicates a connectivity issue. Here are some common causes and fixes to help you resolve the problem:
🔍 Common Causes & Fixes
IP Address Conflict or Change
When switching between Ethernet and Wi-Fi, the printer may be assigned different IP addresses, which can confuse your computer or the HP Smart app.Fix:
- Reserve a static IP address for the printer in your router’s DHCP settings.
- Alternatively, set a manual/static IP directly on the printer:
- On the printer's display, go to Settings > Network > Ethernet Settings > Advanced Settings > IP Settings, then choose Manual and enter an IP address that is outside the DHCP range of your router.
Incorrect Port in Printer Driver
Windows might still be using the Wi-Fi IP or WSD port when you're connected via Ethernet.Fix:
- Open Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
- Right-click on your printer and select Printer Properties.
- Go to the Ports tab and ensure the selected port is:
- A Standard TCP/IP port that matches the Ethernet IP.
- If necessary, create a new port:
- Click Add Port > Standard TCP/IP Port > New Port...
- Enter the printer’s Ethernet IP and follow the prompts.
Network Isolation or VLAN Issue
Some routers isolate wired and wireless devices for security, especially in mesh systems or guest networks.Fix:
- Check your router settings for:
- AP/client isolation
- VLAN segmentation
- Guest network access
- Ensure all devices (PC and printer) are on the same subnet and network.
Ethernet Port or Cable Issue
A damaged Ethernet cable or a faulty printer Ethernet port can lead to unstable connections.Fix:
- Try using a different Ethernet cable and connect it to a different port on your router.
- Check if the Ethernet light on the printer is blinking steadily when connected.
Firmware or Driver Glitch
Outdated firmware or drivers can cause connectivity issues.Fix:
- Update the printer firmware via Settings > Printer Maintenance > Update Printer.
- Update the HP Smart app or printer driver from HP support site.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
