Laptop connects with internet and network and printer appears on search from laptop. Printer connected throught ethernet and power adapters to router. Tried HP Smart to fault find, but once it found printer (which is set as default) it fails to communicate with it and fails.  Tried to access printer's web panel but browser states timeout in attempting connection.  Unplugged printer and replugged, rebooted router and rebooted laptop.  No change to problem.  Laptop states scanner and printer offline.  Help

Hi @timeshort,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

I am sorry to hear that your HP printer is experiencing issues connecting to the network, especially when connected via Ethernet, I would request you to please follow the steps:

Access Printer Web Panel

  • Open a browser and type the printer’s IP address directly (e.g., http://192.168.x.x).
  • If it times out, the printer may not be on the same subnet or may have lost its IP lease.
  • Try pinging the IP from your laptop (ping 192.168.x.x) to confirm connectivity.

Reset Network Settings

  • On the printer, go to Network SettingsRestore Network Defaults.
  • Reconnect the printer to the router via Ethernet.
  • Allow a few minutes for the router to assign a new IP.

Re-add Printer on Laptop

  • Remove the printer from Devices & Printers (Windows) or Printers & Scanners (Mac).
  • Add it again using the IP address or network discovery.
  • Ensure it’s set as the default printer.

HP Smart App

  • Open HP Smart and select Add Printer.
  • If it finds the printer but fails to connect, manually enter the IP address.
  • Update HP Smart to the latest version.

Firmware & Driver Updates

  • Visit HP’s support site for your printer model.
  • Download and install the latest firmware and drivers.
  • Firmware updates often fix connectivity issues.

Hope this helps, Please revert if the issue persists.

Take care and have an amazing day!
