The printer in connected to the same wireless network as all of the other devices in the house, I can even print a wireless network test report but I can't get the HP smart app to see the printer.  I log into my HP account to manage printers and it shows 0 printers and nothing under status or connectivity.

Hi @radams14, Welcome to HP Support Community. 👋

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw is connected to your network, like it's there, but just not visible to HP Smart and your HP account. 🤔 Let's do some digital detective work to make sure they can "see" each other and get your printer recognized! 🕵️‍♂️ We'll use a systematic approach to bring your printer back into the HP Smart fold. 🖨➡️💻📱

Check Printer Connectivity

Confirm IP Address

  • Print a Network Configuration Report from the printer.
  • Find the IP address (e.g., 192.168.1.xxx).

Ping the Printer

  • On a computer connected to the same network, open Command Prompt and type: ping [printer's IP address]
  • If you get a response, the printer is connected properly.

Access the Printer’s Embedded Web Server (EWS)

  • Open a web browser and enter the IP address of the printer.
  • If the page loads, the printer is online.

Restart Network & Devices

Power cycle your printer, router, and computer:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  • Restart your Wi-Fi router (wait 2-3 minutes).
  • Restart your computer/phone.
  • Turn the printer back on and wait for it to reconnect.

Re-add the printer in HP Smart:

  • Open HP Smart → Click Add Printer → Select your printer.
  • If it doesn’t show up, click Set up a new printer.

Manually Add Printer

If the HP Smart app still doesn’t find the printer, try adding it manually using its IP address:

  1. Open HP Smart.
  2. Click Add Printer → Select "Set up a new printer".
  3. Choose Add Printer via IP Address.
  4. Enter the printer’s IP address (from Step 1).

Reinstall HP Smart & Drivers

  1. Uninstall HP Smart from your PC/phone.
  2. Go to HP website and download the latest HP Smart app and full drivers for your printer:
    • Download Here
  3. Install the drivers, restart your device, and re-add the printer.

Check HP Account

  1. Log in to HP Smart (My Account)
  2. If no printers appear, try adding it:
    • Click "Add a printer".
    • If it doesn’t show up, check if it was removed or unregistered.

Reset Network Settings (If Necessary)

If none of the above work, reset the printer’s network settings:

  1. On the printer, go to Setup > Network Setup > Restore Network Settings.
  2. Reconnect the printer to Wi-Fi and try again.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day. ☀️🤝😊

I can print a wireless network test report, but when I try to ping the printer I get no response.  When I log into the app for my network I can see that it is connected though.

@radams14, Thank for your response.

Since the printer appears as connected in the network app but doesn't respond to pings, it may be on a different subnet, have firewall restrictions, or suffer from an unstable connection. Let's troubleshoot further:

1️⃣ Check IP Address & Subnet

Compare Device & Printer IP:

  • Find the printer’s IP address from the Wireless Network Test Report.
  • On your Mac, go to System Preferences → Network and note the IP address of your Mac.
  • Ensure both the printer and Mac are on the same subnet (e.g., 192.168.1.xxx).

If on different subnets, the router may be isolating wireless devices (see Step 3).

2️⃣ Try Accessing the Printer’s Web Page

  • Open a browser on your Mac and enter the printer’s IP address.
  • If it loads, the printer is online, but something is blocking communication.
  • If it does not load, the printer may have a static IP conflict or a connectivity issue.

3️⃣ Disable "AP Isolation" / "Client Isolation" on Router

  • Log into your router’s admin settings.
  • Look for settings like "AP Isolation," "Client Isolation," or "Wireless Isolation"—disable them if enabled.
  • Restart the printer and Mac.

4️⃣ Assign a Static IP to the Printer

  • If your printer’s IP changes frequently, set a manual/static IP via:
    • Printer’s control panel → Network Settings → IPv4 Configuration → Manual IP
    • Use an IP in the same range as your Mac (e.g., 192.168.1.200 if your Mac is 192.168.1.50).

5️⃣ Connect Printer via USB Temporarily & Add to HP Smart

  • Connect the printer via USB and try adding it to HP Smart.
  • If successful, switch back to Wi-Fi and check if it remains detected.

I hope this helps!
