Hi @jwlakeh,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
Thank you for contacting HP Support. I understand your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283cdw can print successfully, but the HP Smart app shows the printer as offline, preventing you from scanning or fully managing the device. I’ll guide you through the steps to resolve this and restore full functionality.
Step 1: Confirm Network Connection
Even if printing works, the printer and app may not be communicating fully if the connection is inconsistent.
- On the printer's control panel:
- Tap the Wireless icon.
- Ensure it says Connected and shows your network name.
- If not, go to Network Settings > Wireless Setup Wizard to reconnect.
- On your PC or mobile device:
- Ensure you’re connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the printer (2.4 GHz preferred).
- If your router uses dual bands (2.4GHz & 5GHz), the printer may only support 2.4GHz.
Step 2: Restart Devices
- Turn off the printer, wait 10 seconds, and turn it back on.
- Restart your computer or mobile device.
- Relaunch the HP Smart app and check the printer status.
Step 3: Remove and Re-add Printer in HP Smart
- Open the HP Smart app.
- Click the printer icon > Remove printer.
- Click Add Printer and follow the prompts to reconnect.
- Wait for the printer to appear as "Ready" before scanning.
Step 4: Enable Web Services (for Scan Features)
- From the printer’s control panel, go to:
- Settings > Web Services or Network Setup > Web Services.
- Make sure Web Services are enabled.
- If not, follow the prompts to enable and update them.
- Once enabled, try scanning again from the HP Smart app.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
