Hi @henrywilsonx

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your printer is experiencing power or hardware issues, possibly related to internal components, software, or settings. Here are some steps you can follow to troubleshoot and hopefully resolve the issue:

1. Check Power Supply:

  • Verify the power cable and adapter: Ensure the power cable is securely connected to both the printer and the power source. A loose connection or damaged cable can cause intermittent power loss.
  • Try a different outlet: Plug the printer into a different power outlet to rule out the possibility of an issue with the outlet.
  • Avoid power strips: If you're using a power strip, try plugging the printer directly into the wall socket instead. Power strips sometimes don’t provide enough stable power to devices.

2. Reset the Printer:

  • Hard reset: Turn the printer off, unplug it from the wall, and leave it unplugged for at least 30 seconds. After that, plug it back in and turn it on. This can sometimes reset internal software issues.

3. Check Printer's Power Settings:

  • Power Saving Mode: Check if your printer has a power-saving feature that turns off the printer after a certain period of inactivity. You may need to disable this setting if it's causing the printer to turn off unexpectedly during jobs. Check your printer's settings via the printer display menu or web interface (if it has one).

4. Check for Firmware Updates:

  • Go to the HP support website or use the HP Smart app to see if there are any firmware updates available for your printer. Sometimes, power-related bugs are fixed with a firmware update.

5. Uninstall and Reinstall Printer Software:

  • Reinstall printer drivers: There may be a software or driver issue causing the printer to malfunction. Try uninstalling the current printer software, and then reinstall the latest drivers from the HP website.
  • Reinstall the printer: If the printer is network-connected (Wi-Fi or Ethernet), remove the printer from your computer and reconnect it. Sometimes resetting the printer’s connection can resolve issues.

6. Printer Overheating:

  • Examine for overheating: Printers can overheat if they're placed in a location with poor ventilation. Ensure the printer has enough airflow and is not surrounded by heat sources.
  • Clean the vents: If your printer has vents, make sure they are not clogged with dust or debris. Overheating can cause the printer to shut off unexpectedly.

7. Check for Internal Hardware Issues:

  • Paper Jams or Obstructions: Sometimes, an internal paper jam or obstruction can cause the printer to shut off unexpectedly. Even if you don’t see any jammed paper, check carefully for small pieces of paper or debris.
  • Internal Faults: If the printer still powers off randomly even after checking all the above, it may have an internal hardware fault (like a malfunctioning power supply or motherboard). If this is the case, contacting HP Support for repair or replacement might be the next step.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
