HP DeskJet 2640 All-in-One Printer

After purchasing HP Deskjet 2600 all in one printer in 10/2019. I've never been successful at connecting it to the Wi-Fi EVER. Now my warranty's expired, but I'm giving it a second chance. You have no support back then . Last night was the first time it actually connected for the very first time to internet using HP Smart,,but then got unplugged. And back to square one just like 6 years ago

The HP DeskJet 2640 All-in-One Printer   is a simple little DeskJet printer --

Good for basic printing and scanning.

The printer might struggle with a modern network.

Although there is likely less reason to believe the printer might have been able to use the network six years ago, "then" matters less than whether you can use the printer on your network "now".

Some checkpoints...

The printer does not support 5GHz and perhaps cannot live on a network where the Wireless frequencies are not separated into separate SSID named networks for each 2.4Ghz and 5GHz.

Worse, if your network is configured to jump from one frequency to another for the purpose of providing continuous service to certain devices, some of which might be moving around the wireless service space, the printer might simply never find the network it needs or quickly fall off the network when the router jumps frequencies.

Next,

This next part is true for any device, and perhaps even more true for printers than other devices --

DHCP allows the router / network to change the IP address when the network deems it useful or necessary.

Printers that lose connection and do not have an IP address to call their own might not find their way back onto the network.

Assign a manual / static IP address to the printer.

Who knows about your network?

Hopefully, you -- If not, then ask for help.

For example,

Ask your ISP (Internet Service Provider) -- the people who provide your Internet services.

Cannot or will not talk to your ISP?

Ask a friend, colleague, family member.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Too much?

Drowning in network talk and things that are too "techie"?

Scroll down -

Consider using Wi-Fi Direct

------------------------------------------------------------------

Still here?

The goal

  • The printer should be connected to an SSID named network for 2.4GHz.
  • The printer should be assigned its own IP address.

Read your user manual.

HP Printers - Using a Wireless Network Test Report

===========================================

What else?

The printer supports Wi-Fi Direct -

and

HP Smart can survive using Wi-Fi Direct.

Running HP Smart with Wi-Fi Direct is not the same thing as running the app in a full wireless network.

That said, Wi-Fi Direct might provide enough of the services you want to get on with your printing and scanning life.

What is Wi-Fi Direct?

Wi-Fi Direct is Wireless without the use of a router controlled network.

The service uses the Wireless radio on the printer to connect the printer wirelessly to your computer (or a supported Tablet or Phone).

You can elect to use Wi-Fi Direct with your printer even if you have a "real router controlled" network for your other devices (phones, TV's, computers, tablets).

Wi-Fi Direct does not support all the features of a router controlled network, but it might suffice for your needs.

The Internet is having issues and I've been all the way disconnected and can't get it to hook back up. I can only get the same results talking to a virtual assistant
