Common problems for Connectivity Issues
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about Printer Wi-Fi, Connectivity Issues and Offline Status. Check out this link: HP printer is offline or unavailable.

I'm trying to connect my printer to our new WiFi.  I'm getting an error report that the printer MAC address needs to be added to our router.  No other wifi device has needed this to be done and I can't do it via our router login.  I've also tried WPS using the button and PIN and while the router says the device is added I'm getting the same error message and a print out saying the printer is unable to connect.  Any ideas on a setting that could be changed on the printer to fix the problem?

Hi @Saddee

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand how frustrating it feels to have your printer refuse to connect when every other device joins the Wi‑Fi without issue. Thank you for already trying WPS and checking your router settings—that effort helps narrow down the cause.

Let’s focus on the printer side to see if we can bypass the MAC address restriction and get it online.

Step 1: Print Network Configuration Page

  • On the printer’s control panel, go to Setup > Reports > Network Configuration Page.
  • This will show the printer’s MAC address and current network status.
  • Keep this handy in case you need to manually add the MAC address to your router later.

Step 2: Manually Connect Using Wireless Setup Wizard

  • On the printer’s control panel, go to Setup > Network > Wireless Setup Wizard.
  • Select your Wi‑Fi network from the list.
  • Enter the Wi‑Fi password carefully (case‑sensitive).
  • This method often bypasses WPS issues and directly authenticates with the router.

Step 3: Check Router Security Settings

  • Ensure your router is using WPA2 or WPA3 Personal security mode.
  • If MAC address filtering is enabled, you’ll need to add the printer’s MAC address manually.
  • If you cannot add it, temporarily disable MAC filtering and retry the connection.

Step 4: Assign a Static IP

  • On the printer’s control panel, go to Setup > Network > Advanced Settings > IP Settings.
  • Choose Manual and assign an IP address within your router’s range (e.g., 192.168.1.50).
  • Enter the subnet mask (usually 255.255.255.0) and gateway (your router’s IP, e.g., 192.168.1.1).
  • This can stabilize the connection when DHCP conflicts occur.

Step 5: Update Firmware

  • On your Windows PC, open the HP App.
  • Select your printer, go to Settings > Advanced Settings > Firmware Update.
  • Install any available updates to ensure compatibility with newer routers.

Once the printer is connected using the Wireless Setup Wizard or a static IP, the “MAC address required” error should disappear and printing over Wi‑Fi will feel seamless again.

Thanks so much for all your suggestions.  I couldn't get any of the wireless options to work, but thankfully found the cable to connect the printer to my laptop and am able to print that way.

Hi @Saddee

You are very welcome!

I’m glad to hear you found a way to get printing working with the cable connection—it’s always good to have a reliable fallback when wireless options don’t cooperate.

If you’d like to revisit the Wi-Fi setup later, here are a few structured checks that often help narrow things down:

Common Wi-Fi Connection Checks

  • Printer placement: Make sure the printer is within range of your router and not blocked by walls or interference.
  • Network band: Some printers only support 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, so if your router is broadcasting only 5 GHz, the printer won’t see it.
  • Router settings: Ensure SSID broadcast is enabled and security is set to WPA2 (printers can struggle with newer WPA3-only networks).
  • Manual setup: Instead of WPS or auto-connect, try entering the Wi-Fi name and password directly on the printer’s control panel or HP Smart app.
  • Firmware updates: Updating the printer’s firmware through HP Smart or the printer’s embedded web server can resolve hidden compatibility issues.

If You’re Happy With USB

  • USB printing is often faster and more stable, especially for large print jobs.
  • You can still use HP Smart or the printer’s driver suite to manage settings, scan, and check ink levels over USB.

Take care, and have an incredible day ahead!
