Over ethernet my printer self-assigns an IP address of 169.254.89.235 as if it can't connect to my network.

I can add the printer, and print to it, and I can access the embedded web server by typing the IP address into my browser, but I can't launch the embedded web server from the HP utility, or from the System Preferences printer panel. And the printer lost connection with web services, which says there is no network connection.

I tried rebooting the router, and I tried assigning a static IP address to the printer, but nothing worked — the printer couldn't be found on my network, and I had no access to the embedded web server at the static address.

I've also tried restoring factory default settings to the printer. Nothing resolves the issue.

This is new behavior — it has functioned fine over ethernet for 3 years, getting its IP address from my router and being connected to my network.

If I switch to Wireless instead of ethernet everything works just fine, but I would prefer to continue to use ethernet. Can this be fixed? Is there a setting somewhere I've missed? Or is my printer just failing?

A self-assigned IP address means there is no communication with the router and printer. Follow the steps below-

  1. Turn the printer off, and then wait 10 seconds.
  2. Disconnect the printer power cord and other cables from the printer
  3. Turn off the computer or the device you are trying to print from.
  4. Connect the printer power cord to the printer, and then turn on the printer.
  5. Disconnect the power cord from your wireless router, and then wait 10 seconds.
  6. Reconnect the power cord to the router. Wait until Internet service is restored. Internet service is interrupted while the router is off.
  7. Turn on the computer.

Try reconnecting the ethernet cable and see if that works. Else, try a different cable.

Also, have everything set up to use DHCP and not use the manual IP address.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

It actually was a bad cable, or at least a bad connection. I had discounted that since I could still reach the printer with wireless disabled. But I guess it was preventing the printer from getting an IP address.
