Hi @Herb541,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand how frustrating it is when your HP printer worked perfectly on your old Mac Pro, but now refuses to cooperate with your Mac Mini running OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion. You're not alone, and I’m here to guide you through restoring functionality.

🖨️ HP Printer Setup on macOS 10.8 Mountain Lion

macOS 10.8 is a legacy operating system, and many HP printers require older drivers that are not included in newer installation packages. Here's how to get your printer working again:

Step-by-Step Fix

1. Download HP Printer Drivers v3.1 for OS X

Apple provides a dedicated driver package for OS X 10.7 and 10.8: 👉 Official HP® Support

This includes printing and scanning support for many HP models compatible with Mountain Lion.

2. Run Apple Software Update

  • Go to Apple Menu > Software Update
  • Let it search for available HP printer drivers
  • Install any updates it finds

If your printer was previously installed, this may automatically restore functionality.

3. Add the Printer Manually

  • Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners
  • Click the + button to add a printer
  • Select your HP printer from the list
  • In the “Use” dropdown, choose the correct HP driver (not AirPrint)
  • Click Add

Make sure the printer shows as “USB” or “Bonjour” in the connection type.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
