I have an HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 printer and am having trouble pairing it with my laptop. According to HP, my printer is expired. Is this the reason for the problem and do I need to buy a brand new printer?

Hi @ReefComer,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If HP is indicating that your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 printer is "expired," this likely refers to the end of support or updates for the model rather than it being unusable. Generally, HP continues to support printers even after they reach "end of life" by offering drivers and software downloads that allow them to function with newer computers and operating systems.

The difficulty in pairing your printer with your laptop could stem from compatibility or connectivity issues, such as outdated drivers, network connection settings, or possibly a firmware issue rather than the printer itself being "expired."

Here are a few steps to try before considering a replacement.

  • Update or Reinstall Drivers: Go to the HP support site and search for your printer model to download the latest drivers compatible with your laptop’s operating system.
  • Check Network Connection: If you're using Wi-Fi, ensure the printer and laptop are on the same network. Reconnect the printer to the network by using the Wireless Setup Wizard on the printer's control panel.
  • USB Connection: If pairing via Wi-Fi is challenging, try connecting the printer via USB to see if it works. This can sometimes bypass network-related issues.
  • HP Print and Scan Doctor: HP offers a free tool for Windows called HP Print and Scan Doctor that can diagnose and fix many printing and scanning problems. It’s available on the HP support site.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
