I installed a new black HP cartridge and now the printer is stuck on "validating...please wait". I have tried a number of things posted on the internet but it always goes back to being stuck. Laptop and Printer are both on the same network and seem to see each other but I also can get a "not connected" error message if I shut down and then power up again. This problem seems to be happening a lot. There must be something I can do.

Hi @Dpwrs
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP printer is stuck on "validating...please wait" after installing a new black cartridge, here are some troubleshooting steps to try:
Check Cartridge Installation:
- Make sure the cartridge is installed correctly. Remove it and reinstall it, ensuring it clicks securely into place. Also, check for any protective tape that might not have been removed.
Reset the Printer:
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source. Wait for about 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on. This can help clear any temporary glitches.
Use HP Smart App:
- Open the HP Smart app on your computer or smartphone. Ensure that your printer is added and check for any updates or notifications regarding the cartridge.
Firmware Update:
- Make sure your printer’s firmware is up to date. You can check for updates through the HP Smart app or the printer’s settings menu.
Perform a Hard Reset:
- For some HP printers, you can perform a hard reset by holding the power button for 15 seconds while the printer is on, then releasing it and turning the printer back on.
Network Connection:
- If you’re experiencing connectivity issues, check your Wi-Fi network. Ensure that both the printer and laptop are connected to the same network. Restart your router if necessary.
Check for Error Messages:
- Look at the printer display for any error messages or codes. If there are any, note them down, as they can provide more specific information about the problem.
Try a Different Cartridge:
- If possible, try using another black cartridge (either a new one or a previously used one) to see if the issue persists. This can help determine if the new cartridge is faulty.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Thanks Rachel 571. I actually tried ALL of those suggestions to no avail. So I reset the printer to factory settings and deleted the printer on my laptop. Then I reconnect the printer to my network and reinsta ll the drivers. Then it work fine . You might want add this. to your list. I wish I would have had your email much earlier as I spent hours trying to find solutions on the net. Perhaps HP could add your amended list to their own articles of support.
Thanks again for taking the time to respond.
