I have printed the "Network Summary" and it shows it is connected to my old wireless network (SSID) that is no longer active. When I try to connect to my new network, it cannot find the printer. I cannot go to a printer info page to connect via Wi-fi Direct Setup because no IP address appears on the printed Network Summary page. It says Wi-fi Direct Setup is Disabled, and I do not know how to Enable it.
I do see a Host Name, Bonjour Service Name, Bonjour Domain Name...

I tried the steps outlined here multiple times and it never worked. Eventually (after days of trying at various times) I read the instructions for setting up AirPrint through Apple. There it mentioned plugging in the USB cord while resetting the Wi-fi (the first step here). Suddenly, the printer was able to find the new network and the computer recognized the printer. HP should make sure to note this step when directing people on how to reset the Wi-fi settings.

Hi @hgoldstrow,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
We understand you're unable to connect your HP LaserJet Pro MFP M29w to a new wireless network on macOS 12 (Monterey), and the printer still shows the old SSID. Since Wi-Fi Direct Setup is disabled and the IP address is missing, the printer is not currently connected to a usable network and needs to be reset and reconfigured.
1. Restore Network Defaults (Resets old wireless settings)
On the printer’s control panel:
- Press and hold the Wireless button (📶) and Cancel button (❌) together for 5–10 seconds.
- Release the buttons when the Wireless light starts blinking.
- This restores default wireless settings and enables Wi-Fi Direct temporarily.
2. Reconnect Using HP Smart App (Recommended for macOS)
- Open or install the HP Smart app on your Mac:
🔗 HP Smart - Free download and install on Windows | Microsoft Store - Ensure your Mac is on the same Wi-Fi network you want the printer to connect to.
- In HP Smart, click “+ Add Printer”.
- Your printer should appear in setup mode. Click it and follow the prompts to connect it to your new Wi-Fi network.
If it does not appear, repeat the network restore step and ensure Wi-Fi is blinking before retrying.
3. (Optional) Enable Wi-Fi Direct Manually
If HP Smart setup fails, you can enable Wi-Fi Direct manually to connect directly:
- Press and hold the Wireless button (📶) until it starts blinking.
- Then press the Resume/Cancel button (❌) twice.
- This should enable Wi-Fi Direct, and a Direct-xx-HP-M29 network should appear on your Mac.
- This should enable Wi-Fi Direct, and a Direct-xx-HP-M29 network should appear on your Mac.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Hi @hgoldstrow,
Thank you for sharing your experience — we truly appreciate your feedback.
You're right — in some cases, especially with certain HP printers and Apple/macOS environments, connecting the printer to your computer via USB during Wi-Fi setup can help initialize or re-enable wireless network detection, particularly after a reset. This is especially true when setting up AirPrint, as macOS may require direct USB communication to detect and configure the printer before it will broadcast over the network.
Is there anything else that I can help you with today?
