The HP Smart App consistently fails in connecting to my printer wirelessly. I cannot troubleshoot or submit a ticket b/c the SN I'm plugging in (on the bottom of the printer) is not recognized. I'm wondering if I have a fake printer. Bought on Amazon but I'll I want to do is get a refund for it. It's the worst. I'm beyond the Amazon return window but have had this product for less than 6 mos. and it's impossible to connect, and honestly worthless. I have a LaserJet and has worked perfectly for years, but working with this all in one is a nightmare. Pls help.

Hi @Kensington8,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
I can feel your frustration through your words. When a printer refuses to connect, the HP Smart app loops endlessly, and the serial number isn’t recognized, it can feel like you’re fighting a machine that simply doesn’t want to exist.
First: Don’t worry: HP DeskJet 2800e fakes are extremely rare.
Even units bought on Amazon (including 3rd‑party sellers) are almost never counterfeit.
But unrecognized serial number usually points to:
1️⃣ A mis-typed serial number (very common)
The underside label is tiny, and many people mix it up:
- 0 ↔ O
- 1 ↔ I
- 5 ↔ S
- 8 ↔ B
2️⃣ The printer is from another region
If the seller imported it, the serial might not validate on the U.S./India HP support page.
This does not mean it’s fake.
3️⃣ The printer is not yet added to HP’s entitlement database
This sometimes happens with newer or region-transferred models.
💛 Good news: You can still get support even if the serial number doesn’t validate online. HP has alternate verification routes.
Let’s fix the connection issue first, step-by-step, the HP way
STEP 1: Reset the printer’s Wi-Fi (VERY IMPORTANT)
This clears old configs that often block HP Smart detection.
Do this:
- Press & hold the Wi-Fi button + Cancel button together for 5 seconds
You’ll hear a soft chirp and see the Wi-Fi light start pulsing.
This restores the printer to Wi‑Fi Setup Mode.
STEP 2: Add the printer through HP Smart again
- Open HP Smart
- Tap Add Printer
- Look for the HP DeskJet 28xx series
- Select your Wi-Fi network
- Enter the Wi-Fi password (case‑sensitive)
Important:
📌 The printer supports 2.4 GHz only, not 5 GHz.
If your router combines both, the connection may fail.
STEP 3: Reset HP Smart (your phone/computer)
Sometimes the app is the problem, not the printer.
On Mobile:
- Uninstall HP Smart
- Restart device
- Reinstall HP App
On Windows/Mac:
- Sign out → Quit → Relaunch
- Clear devices
- Re-add printer
I hope this helps.
Take care and have an amazing day!
